“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.” (1 John 4:7-12 NASB1995)

This is another passage of Scripture which needs to be understood in the light of the whole of the book of 1 John and with a biblical understanding of the meaning of this word “love.” For this is not human love, but agape love, which means to prefer, which primarily means to prefer what God prefers, which is all that is holy, righteous, obedient, self-sacrificing, honest, faithful, and morally pure and upright, etc. And so it carries with it the idea of showing unselfish preference to one another and to each other’s needs.

But all this must be done according to the teachings of the Scriptures, and according to the will of God. For when we exercise this kind of love, as believers in Jesus Christ, we are preferring to live through Christ, embracing God’s will, choosing his choices, and obeying them through his power. For to love with this kind of love will never involve what is against the will of God, and it will never involve anything immoral, dishonest, and untrustworthy. And lying to people is never loving, no matter how one might dress it up.

And the reason that it states here that everyone who loves is born of God, and knows God, is because this love is from God and not from our human flesh, and so it aligns with God’s will and purpose for our lives. And we can only know this kind of love if we are those who are of genuine biblical faith in Jesus Christ. And if we read the whole of 1 John we will see that true biblical faith must result in us denying self, dying to sin, and walking in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, or it is not biblical faith.

For God sent Jesus Christ into the world that we might live through him. And if we are living through Christ, and not of our flesh, we will be those whose lives are committed to obeying our Lord and his commands, and who are living holy lives, to the glory and praise of God, who are no longer making sin our habit. For now righteousness and holiness are what we practice. And living through Christ means we are listening for his voice to obey him in doing what he has called us to do according to his purpose for our lives.

For, in Jesus’ death on that cross, he put our sins to death with him so that, by God-persuaded and God-gifted faith in him, we will deny self, die to sin daily, and walk (in conduct) in obedience to his commands in holy living, in the power of God, according to the will of God. For Jesus shed his blood for us to buy us back for God (to redeem us) out of our bondage (slavery) to sin so that we will now serve him with our lives in walks of surrender to him, in obedience to our Lord and to his calling that he has upon our lives.

And, because God so loved us, we also ought to love one another with that same love, which is obedient to God, self-sacrificing, morally pure, honest, faithful, and thoughtful of other’s needs, especially their need of faith in Jesus Christ which must result in us dying to sin and walking in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, as a matter of life practice. And we must be those who are spreading the good news of our salvation to the world around us so that many people will be saved and have eternal life with God.

For we learn in 1 John 1-3 that if we claim that we have fellowship with God, but yet we walk in darkness (sin), we are liars. If we claim that we know God, but we do not obey his commandments, in practice, we are liars. For it is not the one who claims he is “in Christ” who is “in Christ,” but it is the one who has denied self, died with Christ to sin, and who is now walking in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in practice, and no longer in sin. We have the hope and the promise of eternal life with God in heaven.

Walking in The Light

When I lift up my voice, and
Sing praise unto God,
I will fellowship with my
Lord and Savior, King.
In Him there is no darkness.
He is in the light of truth.
If we walk in His light,
From sin He purifies.

If we repent of our sins,
He’ll forgive us now,
When we humble ourselves, and
Before Jesus bow.
The man who says, “I know Him,”
But does not obey His truth,
There is no truth in him.
In darkness still he’s found.

Do not love the world of sin,
For it is hell bound.
If you follow the world, you’ll
Not in Christ be found.
The world and its desires
Will not last; they’ll expire.
The one who does God’s will,
Receives eternal life.

See that what you have heard from
Christ remains in you.
Then, you’ll remain in Christ, and
In His Father, too.
This is what He promised us –
His eternal life with God.
So, continue in Him, and
You’ll receive a crown.
