In the book of Proverbs, Solomon mentions fools over 30 times. In the book of Ecclesiastes, he mentions fools a dozen more times.
He doesn't call anyone a fool by name. But he spells out the type of things that fools do.
I've read through Proverbs a number of times. Sometimes it helps me when people are being fools, but more often than not... it helps me see when I am being a fool.
The New Testament talks about fools also.
In Luke 12:13-21; Jesus gives the parable about the rich fool. God calls this man a fool because he is storing up treasures for himself here on earth, rather than in heaven.
This life is temporary. Whatever treasures we will have in this life are fleeting. The next life is permanent, whatever treasure and rewards we have there, are forever.
Luke 12:20; "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?'
In 1 Cor 15:36; Paul says you're a fool if you don't understand this current mortal will die. He says you won't get a new glorified body unless your "old" body dies first.
In Matt 23:17; Jesus says the Pharisees are fools because they think more about the gold (money) in the temple than they think about the temple itself (God's house).
In Romans 1, Paul mentions fools also.
Rom 1:21; For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Rom 1:22; Professing to be wise, they became fools,
If there was ever a verse to that speaks those in politics and the media today... well, enough said.
But it seems these people weren't always fools. It says "even though they knew God" (unlike those in Matt 7:21-23; who never knew God)... they "became" fools.
It seems it is possible for wise people to ... "become" fools.
Jesus gives His longest and most well known Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 5, 6 and 7. The sermon takes up 3 chapters. But after He gets done with His sermon, He says this...
Matt 7:24; "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Matt 7:25; "And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.
Matt 7:26; "Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
Matt 7:27; "The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall."
Jesus says if we hear His words "and acts of them". Then we are wise. Simply hearing His words, and doing nothing with them is being foolish.
Jesus says if we hear His words "and does NOT act on them", you are a foolish man. Simply hearing His word does nothing for you.
Luke 13:26; "Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets';
Luke 13:27; and He will say, 'I tell you, I do not know where you are from; DEPART FROM ME, ALL YOU EVILDOERS.'
In Matt 25; we have the story of the 5 foolish virgins.
Mat 25:1; "Then the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Mat 25:2; "Five of them were foolish, and five were prudent.
Mat 25:3; "For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them,
Five of the virgins were wise, but five of the virgins were foolish. They didn't plan well. They ran out of oil. It wasn't like they never had the oil, they simply "ran out".
If you let your oil run out... you are "foolish".
The Bible talks about people who want to have conversations about "foolish" subjects.
2 Tim 2:23; But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels.
Tit 3:9; But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.
Not all controversies are foolish, but some are. We sometimes argue over the most "non important" things. Was Jesus in the slightly less than 3 days, or slightly more than 3 days?
Does your salvation depend on this? Do dogs have a soul, and go to heaven? Does your salvation depend on this? We waste a lot of conversation talking about meaningless things.
Matt 12:36; But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
Matt 12:37; For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
None of us want to be fools. None of us want to be called foolish (especially by Jesus/God). ...maybe we need to be careful how we live, how we act, and what we say.
