So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. As they drank the wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone. Daniel 5:3-4 NIV

Sometimes being shaken begins with thinking you can’t be shaken. It may come after a personal victory and usually involves believing you’re skilled enough and strong enough to manage a crisis without help. It is believing you’re wise—but ultimately acting foolishly.

Belshazzar was king who believed that no nation was stronger than his, that no one had a greater chance of winning a war, and that no one could defeat him or stop his plans. He hadn’t met God…and he needed to.

The king took holy objects that had been in God’s temple and used them to throw a party. Those vessels were supposed to be returned to the temple, not used for a party. The king assumed he was stronger and wiser. He wasn’t.

You will always be shaken when you assume you might know more than God—about anything.

Prayer: Father, place a fence across the path to arrogance. Keep me from believing that I know more than You. Place stop signs on the way to pride. Keep me focused on You and the plans You have for me.
