Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan and he said to him, You son of a perverse, rebellious woman, do not I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother who bore you? 1 Samuel 20:30 AMPC

Today’s scripture contains a father’s words to his son. We can only imagine the hurt King Saul’s insulting accusation caused Jonathan.

At issue was the deep friendship the royal heir had with the up-and-coming hero, conqueror of Goliath. The account of that contest is in 1 Samuel 17; the next chapter begins, “When David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own life” (18:1).

Three verses later, Jonathan seemed to recognize that he would not succeed to Saul’s throne, and he gave David his royal robe. Their friendship was sealed by a vow of protection made before “the Lord, the God of Israel” (20:12)

Jonathan’s devotion was tested by Saul’s angry response—which included, as David had also experienced, the king hurling a spear at him (20:33). But Jonathan, whose name is synonymous with true friendship, could stay firm in the face of trouble because of his prior, intentional commitments.

Today, we will face opposition and insults for our friendship with Jesus. Have we made a firm, intentional decision to stand with Him regardless of anyone’s reaction?

Prayer: Lord, I want to stand with You, no matter what. Give me a heart of courage.
