Fill My Cup Up Lord

Before the waitress comes over to fill my coffee cup, I usually drain the cold dregs from the last cup. I like new, fresh, piping hot coffee, and will empty my cup of the old so there is more room for the new, fresh, filling. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they SHALL be FILLED." This promise from Jesus is only to the hungry and the thirsty. In a literal sense, wasn't this fulfilled in the upper room? Isn't that where those who were hungry for God waited and prayed and sought to have their emptiness filled by His Spirit?

Is there a pattern here revealing that He responds to our emptiness? As we pour out our lives in service to Him; as we rid ourselves of all the sins and weights that fill us up; as we empty our vessels of the old dregs to make room for His new wine; as we present Him with clean, empty vessels, He fills us with His Divine Nature. Let's face it; sometimes we are just too full of ourselves. We offer The Lord our fullness, when He is wanting to fill us with His Spirit. We try to display all that we have rather than make room for all that He is. We tend to measure our Christianity by all we know and what we do, while Scripture says that His strength is made perfect in our weakness.

There is a remarkable story in the Bible of a poor, destitute widow who cries out to the prophet Elisha to save her family from destruction. His reply to her is strange indeed. He tells her to go collect all the empty jars she can and that God will meet her need by filling these empty vessels with oil. What a picture of what church should be today! As we gather together all the empty vessels in our community into one place, and then cry out to God for a fresh filling, He rushes into the place and overflows us with the Oil of His Love. Remember though, according to the widow's story, we can only be filled to the extent of our emptiness we present to The Lord. We must get hungry for Him! We must be thirsty for His Righteousness! We must become desperate for His Presence to come and fill our empty hearts. Then, and only then, will He 'rend the heavens and come down' on our behalf. God be with you all...
