He refuted the Jews with powerful arguments in public debate. Using the Scriptures, he explained to them that Jesus was the Messiah. Acts 18:28 NLT
Apollos—a Jew from Alexandria, Egypt—was a great speaker who was eloquent and powerful in his preaching of the scriptures. He was also well educated in the way of Christ and was known for being fiery in his enthusiasm. He traveled to the Achaia region (present-day western Greece), where he debated with Jews about the Messiah, using the scriptures.
Apollos was gifted in his presentation, but don’t miss his enthusiasm, which surely led to his dedication to the scriptures. The two go hand in hand. Every day, you have opportunities to defend the faith and to point people toward the Messiah. You don’t have to be an expert theologian to do so. But knowing the scriptures well is important.
If fellow Christians in your small circle were to describe your faith, what would they say? It would take a log of courage, but it might be worth asking them to give you an honest assessment. Then take the results to the Lord in prayer, devoting yourself to a stronger commitment to Christ and the scriptures.
Prayer: Father, make me into a modern-day Apollos. I want to shine brightly for You and be able to give the world an answer for the hope I have in Christ.
