And he said, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life." 1 Kings 19:14 NKJV
The prophet Elijah had just performed an incredible miracle that showed the people of Israel the power of the one true God (see 1 Kings 18:16-40). Yet a short time later, he is alone, having fled because of threats on his life. Elijah is so depressed and discouraged that he complains to God that it is unfair that he, a faithful servant of the Lord, should be alone in his suffering. He believes in his heart that he is the only true prophet of God left in all of Israel.
Elijah wasn’t truly alone, and God would later prove that to him. But in his discouragement, Elijah felt alone—just as you sometimes may feel alone in serving God faithfully.
When you feel all alone, don’t try to keep how you feel from your Father in heaven. Instead, tell Him how you feel and ask Him to encourage you—both with His presence and with the help of some godly friends.
Prayers: Lord, serving You faithfully sometimes feels like a lonely endeavor. When I feel along, bring committed Christian people into my life so that we can encourage one another.
