In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. Psalm 56:11 NKJV

Fear is a powerful motivator. When fear hits, the brain gets hijacked by the amygdale and releases chemicals to prompt the fight-or-flight response. Your heart rate increases. Your blood pressure goes up, directing blood away from the intestines and toward skeletal muscles. Your breathing speeds up to supply oxygen to the blood. You are ready for action!

While you may not have control over your body’s response to a scary stimulus, you do have the rationality to master your fight-or-flight instinct. When you get back control of your brain, ask yourself, “Is this thing worth being afraid of?”

The best antidote to fear is trust. You may be afraid to jump out of an airplane, but if you trust the parachute, you can overcome your fear. You may be afraid of evil, but if you trust God, your soul is safe from harm.

Matthew 10:28 says, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

The point isn’t to be afraid of God but rather to recognize His power over all situations. Let this holy fear make you ready for action—then trust God with the results of that action.

Prayer: Lord, help me trust You more than I fear the things of this world.
