A sign of spiritual maturity is that we are not easily excited.
Excitement according to the dictionary is to be "emotionally aroused, especially to pleasure or agitation".
Excitement is emotions from external stimuli. Joy on the other hand, is a pleasurable emotion from within. Jesus had much joy, but He was not easily excited or troubled by outward things.
From the Bible, there is no example of Jesus ever getting excited. I don't think Jesus ever got excited. He also never got worried. Even when His friend Lazarus died in John 11, He did not act shocked, He did not act worried, He remained calm.
Notice Jesus's reaction to the magnificent buildings:
Matt 24:1 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings.
Matt 24:2 ""Do you see all these things?" he asked. "Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.""
Jesus was also unwilling to dance or mourn at the bidding of the external stimuli:
Matt 11:17 "'We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.'
A crucified person is one whose fleshly desires and emotions have been dealt with by the cross, and the characteristics of Christ are displayed in them.
Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me."
Worldly people are excited by many things, the latest iPad, the latest celebrity, the next best song or fashion. Even excitement about what God is doing can be a manifestation of our flesh, if it causes us to lose sight of God and focus upon what He is doing in the outward realm. There is no example of Jesus ever getting excited about the miracles He performed or the crowds which followed Him. One characteristic of a person who has been crucified with Christ, is that they are not easily excited by worldly and external stimuli. Even Jesus remained perfectly calm and at peace in a storm. Such people have a quiet contentment and peace in their souls which results in great joy from within.
