In a time when many pulpits shy away from judgment and sin, we must be clear: there comes a moment when God's mercy ceases and His judgment begins. When He drops the hammer, it is final.
While we can certainly debate the length of time one will spend directly in the fires of hell and how much agony a spirit will endure, as we know, God is good (Psalm 136:1), just (Job 34:12), and righteous in all His ways (Psalm 145:17). What is not up for debate is the inescapability of eternal punishment in a place called the lake of fire.
1. Hell Is Real and Conscious
Luke 16:19–31 gives us the clearest picture from Jesus Himself: "In Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me... for I am in anguish in this flame.’” (Luke 16:23-24, ESV)
Notice:
A. The rich man is in an agonising fire.
B. He is aware.
C. He feels.
D. He remembers.
E. He regrets.
F. He cannot leave.
This is not torture in a sadistic sense. This is agony, the torment of knowing you are eternally separated from God, conscious of your guilt, your lost opportunities, and the unending justice of your punishment.
2. Hell Is Eternal – Not Temporary
The Bible is painfully clear: hell lasts forever.
Revelation 14:11 (ESV) "And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night..."
Matthew 25:46 (ESV) "And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
The same word for “eternal” is used for heaven and for hell. If heaven is eternal, so is hell.
Revelation 20:10 (ESV) "And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur... and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever."
Not symbolic. Not poetic. Not purgatory. Forever and ever.
3. Hell Is Final – There Is No Escape
There is no appeal, no parole, no exit door.
Hebrews 9:27 (ESV) "And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment."
No reincarnation. No reset. No purgatory. After death, judgment.
2 Thessalonians 1:8–9 (ESV) "...in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God... They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord..."
This destruction is not annihilation, it is separation from God, the source of all light, joy, peace, and hope.
4. Hell Will Be Full of Memory and Regret
The rich man remembers his life. He begs that someone go warn his brothers.
“I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house—for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them..." (Luke 16:27–28)
Agony is amplified by memory. Every sermon heard but ignored. Every altar call resisted. Every time you said, “Maybe later.”
5. When God Drops the Hammer, It’s Too Late
There is a finality to God's judgment that cannot be overstated.
Proverbs 29:1 (ESV) "He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck, will suddenly be broken beyond healing."
Genesis 6:3 (ESV) "My Spirit shall not abide in man forever..."
God is long-suffering, but He is not endlessly patient. There comes a point when He will no longer strive with man.
Conclusion: Flee from the Wrath to Come
Hell is real. It is eternal. It is conscious. It is inescapable. And many will be there.
"Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction..." (Matthew 7:13)
But there is still hope today.
“Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2)
The same Jesus who warned of hell endured the wrath of God on the cross to save you from it. But you must come to Him now.
Invitation - Will you wait until it’s too late? Will you gamble with eternity? When God drops the hammer, there will be no undoing it.
Come to Christ while the door of mercy is still open.
Luke 5:32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
