God’s cure for the restlessness of religion and the resentments of consumer society is to patiently wait for God’s work and to enjoy what you have. Rather than worrying about what will come next and whether you can control it, God’s blessing to you is the beauty of His work in your life. If you trust God to work in you, then the outcome God brings about will be a source of rest and comfort. Religious striving can sometimes interfere with the slow, deep work of God in His people.
If patience and endurance are called for when it comes to waiting on God’s redemption in your life, then enjoyment is equally important for the challenges of consumer society. Gratitude fights against the disruption of advertisements and comparisons to others, enabling you to be fully present among the people and places in your life.
God intends for you to enjoy your family, friends, and community.
