John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, "Are you the Messiah we've been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?" Matthew 11:2-3 NLT

A common question in small groups or after church services is “Why doesn’t God share more information with us?”

John the Baptist certainly felt this confusion. Jesus said that no human being was “greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11 NLT), but John still wasn’t given the inside information he wanted. Sitting in prison, he sent his disciples to ask Jesus if He was the Messiah.

When Jesus walked in human flesh, He sometimes knew the inside information and other times He didn’t. He knew the past life of the woman at the well (John 4:16-19) but didn’t know when the “the son of man” would come (Matthew 24:36). Why? Jesus was fully God but chose to be “born as a human being” and submit Himself to the Father’s will, which included not having all the information (Philippians 2:7 NLT).

Like John, on earth you serve the Father’s purposes. He is using your life to teach the angels who “are eagerly watching these things happen” (1 Peter 1:12 NLJT), and He is showing you that your deepest meaning comes from a faith that embraces “the evidence of things we cannot see” (Hebrews 11:1 NLJT), a faith that finds its greatest joy somewhere between the questions and the answers.

Prayer: Father, help me to trust that You both have and are the answer I need.
