I'm curious..the bible says the earth is thousands of years only. I fully believe in the word of GOD, however there is overwhelming evidence to support the fact the earth is indeed billions of years old. How old does the bible say our universe is?

Thanks, and GOD Bless!

Hi there BornAgain55, welcome to Talk Jesus!

Article from gotquestions.org
Question: "What is the age of the earth? How old is the earth?"

Answer: Given the fact that, according to the Bible, Adam was created on the sixth day of our planet’s existence, we can determine a Biblically-based, approximate age for the earth by looking at the chronological details of the human race. This of course assumes that the Genesis account is accurate, that the six days of creation described in Genesis were literal 24-hour periods, and that there were no ambiguous chronological gaps.

The genealogies listed in Genesis chapters five and eleven provide the age at which Adam and his descendants each begot the next generation in a successive ancestral line from Adam to Abraham. By determining where Abraham fits into history chronologically and by adding up the ages provided in Genesis chapters five and eleven, it becomes apparent that the Bible teaches the earth to be about 6,000 years old, give or take a few hundred years.

What about the popular age of about 4.6 billion years accepted by most scientists today and taught in the vast majority of our academic institutions? This age is primarily derived from two dating techniques: radiometric dating and the geologic timescale. Scientists who advocate the younger age of about 6,000 years insist that radiometric dating is flawed in that it is founded upon a series of faulty assumptions while the geologic timescale is flawed in that it employs circular reasoning [see our articles on radiometric dating and the geologic timescale]. Moreover, they point to the debunking of old-earth myths, like the popular misconception that it takes long periods of time for stratification, fossilization and the formation of diamonds, coal, oil, stalactites, stalagmites, etc, to occur. Finally, young-earth advocates present positive evidence for a young age for the earth in place of the old-earth evidences which they debunk [see our article on evidences for a young earth]. Young-earth scientists acknowledge that they are in the minority today but insist that their ranks will swell over time as more and more scientists reexamine the evidence and take a closer look at the currently accepted old-earth paradigm.

Ultimately, the age of the earth cannot be proven. Whether 6,000 years or 4.6 billion years – both viewpoints (and everything in between) rests on faith and assumptions. Those who hold to 4.6 billion years trust that methods such as radiometric dating are reliable, and that nothing has occurred in history that may have disrupted the normal decay of radio-isotopes. Those who hold to 6,000 years trust that the Bible is true, and that other factors explain the “apparent” age of the earth, such as the global flood, or God creating the universe in a state that “appears” to give it an very long age. As an example, God created Adam and Eve as fully-grown adult human beings. If a doctor were to have examined Adam and Eve on the day of their creation, the doctor would have estimated their age at 20 years (or whatever age they appeared to be) - when, in fact, Adam and Eve were less than one day old. Whatever the case, there is always good reason to trust the Word of God over the words of atheistic scientists with an evolutionary agenda.

I think this article makes it quite clear, and if we are Christians and have faith in Christ Jesus and God, we will accept the Bible as truth, 100% truth!

God bless,
Much love

Hi thanks for your prompt reply! I never knew those dating tools were inaccurate! That now to me makes a lot of sense. There is one more thing..I was reading a lot of space and stars etc, and it said that stars are billions of light years away, and the light from them takes years and years to travel to earth. So we're seeing light that was projected years ago, when we look at the sky. So only earth is 6,000 years old, and not the entire galaxy right? Does the Bible say anything about this?

Thanks for all the help, and GOD bless!

Glad to be of help!
Question: "How can the light of stars billions of light years away from the earth have reached us if the earth is only thousands of years old?"

Answer: Distant Starlight - A light-year is the maximum distance that light can travel in one year in the vacuum of space. Consequentially, it takes billions of years for light to travel billions of light-years through space. From our vantage point here on Earth we can see light from stars that are billions of light-years away. It is reasonable therefore to assume that our universe is at least billions of years old – old enough to give the light from these stars enough time to reach our planet billions of light-years away.

This reasonable assumption contradicts the Young-Earth (YE) perspective which claims that the universe is less than 10,000 years old. If there was not a strong scientific case for the YE perspective, this contradiction would not merit a second thought. The growing body of evidence supporting the YE view is substantial enough however to warrant a thoughtful investigation into whether or not this apparent contradiction can resolved reasonably. And so we ask the question: How can the light of stars billions of light-years away reach the Earth in only a few thousand years?

Gravitational Time Dilation

According to Albert Einstein, space is not the empty “nothingness” that most of us perceive it to be. It is filled with what Einstein called ether. Dictionary.com defines ether as “an all-pervading, infinitely elastic, massless medium.” Everything that exists within the bounds of our universe does so within this massless medium.

As dictionary.com notes, ether is infinitely elastic. It can be stretched and distorted. In order to visualize this, imagine a tightly stretched cloth. This is ether. Now imagine dropping a heavy ball (like a bowling ball) onto the cloth, right in the middle. This would cause the cloth to sag in the middle. The heavy ball represents dense matter, like our planet. Einstein believed that matter causes space to sag, similar to how the heavy ball causes the stretched cloth to sag. These sags in space are known as gravity wells.

Now, if we placed smaller, lighter balls (like marbles) onto the cloth along with the heavy ball, they would roll toward the center, into the sag caused by the heavy ball. Moreover, they would contribute to the overall sagging of the cloth, even if only slightly. This motion towards the center represents gravity. According to Einstein’s view of gravity, if smaller, lighter forms of matter are close enough, they can be drawn into the gravity wells of larger, denser forms of matter. While they each create their own sag in space, some gravity wells are deeper and more influential than others (that is, they generate a stronger gravitational force). One thing they all have in common: they distort time.

In the 1960s, physicists Robert Pound and Glen Rebka experimentally confirmed a theoretical consequence of Einstein’s Theories of Relativity called the Gravitational Time Dilation Effect (GTDE). Pound and Rebka were able to demonstrate that time passes slower for objects the further they travel into a gravity well. For example, Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites are further away from the Earth than objects on the planet’s surface and are therefore less immersed in the gravity well caused by Earth’s mass. The result is that time passes a little faster for our GPS satellites than it does for us here on the surface since we are deeper inside of the Earth’s gravity well. Atomic clocks aboard the satellites and some stationed here on Earth have been used to detect and measure this difference in the rate of time’s passage.

Likewise, an atomic clock in Greenwich, England (at sea level) records a slower rate of time than the atomic clock in Boulder, Colorado (at 5,430 feet above sea level). At these relatively small altitudinal differences the measurable effect is minor. The effect across the greater cosmos can be much more dramatic. The deeper a gravity well, the stronger the GTDE. In fact, according to General Relativity, time actually stands still at the boundary of a black hole – an area known to scientists as an “event horizon,” where gravity is so intense that even light cannot escape (hence the name “black hole”).

Now, let’s set aside the GTDE for a moment and consider another important astronomical phenomenon: stellar redshifts. Redshifts are a Doppler Effect phenomenon whereby radiational wavelengths (like those of starlight) lengthen as they move further away from an observer. The general consensus among astronomers is that observed stellar redshifts indicate that the universe is expanding (Hubble’s Law). By extrapolating this expansion backwards it becomes apparent that the primordial universe was somewhat denser, more compact than it is today.

In a bounded universe wherein matter has a center and an edge, the material compression as described above would serve to deepen the gravity well caused by the combined mass of the universe. This would intensify the GTDE, causing time to pass much slower near the center of the universe (deeper in the well) than near its edge (nearer the surface of the well).

The implication is paradoxical: Even if the entire universe was created all at once in the beginning (and should therefore be the same age), some parts can be substantially younger than others due to the relativistic nature of time. Light could travel billions of light-years over billions of years in some parts of the universe in what we on Earth would perceive to be a much shorter period of time. As the universe expands and matter spreads out across space, the universal gravity well would gradually even out, lessening the rate of time difference across the universe.

Many astrophysicists and astronomers reject the idea of a bounded universe with our galaxy, the Milky Way, near or at its center. But this is a philosophical presupposition, not a scientific conclusion founded upon empirical data. As world-renown astrophysicist Dr. George F. R. Ellis candidly explained, “People need to be aware that there is a range of models that could explain the observations. For instance, I can construct you a spherically symmetrical universe with Earth at its center, and you cannot disprove it based on observations... you can only exclude it on philosophical grounds. In my view there is absolutely nothing wrong in that. What I want to bring into the open is the fact that we are using philosophical criteria in choosing our models. A lot of cosmology tries to hide that.” (W. Wayt Gibbs, “Profile: George F. R. Ellis,” Scientific American, October 1995, Vol. 273, No.4, p. 55)

In summary, the Gravitational Time Dilation Effect is a theoretical solution to the YE problem of distant starlight which, amazingly, reconciles evidence for a young Earth with evidence for an old universe. Many astrophysicists and astronomers reject one of the major foundational suppositions upon which the GTDE explanation rests (a bounded universe with the Milky Way at or near the center), not because of the observable data but because of their philosophical perspectives.

God bless you!

Hi and another prompt reply. I read this article and it made a LOT of sense. Upon Googleing it some more, I found a wikipedia entry that explained it very clearly.

Gravitational time dilation is a consequence of Albert Einstein's theories of relativity and related theories which causes time to pass at different rates in regions of a different gravitational potential; the higher the local distortion of spacetime due to gravity, the slower time passes.
This has been demonstrated by noting that atomic clocks at differing altitudes (and thus different gravitational potential) will eventually show different times. The effects detected in such experiments are extremely small, with differences being measured in nanoseconds.
Gravitational time dilation was first described by Albert Einstein in 1907 as a consequence of special relativity in accelerated frames of reference. In general relativity, it is considered to be difference in the passage of proper time at different positions as described by a metric tensor of spacetime. The existence of gravitational time dilation was first confirmed directly by the Pound-Rebka experiment.
It said it only mere nano seconds of time would be effected. We're literally talking about 70 billion years from end to end of our wonderful and beautiful galaxy. While your article gives a possible explanation, it doesn't seem plausible when looking further into it. Are there are Biblical quotes to explain this phenomena?

Thanks, and as always GOD Bless you!

Not quite sure, I am no scientist and I doubt the Bible is a book of scientific answers, like you just did, I think the best would be if you do the research yourself, or even better have faith. Whatever way this universe is fitted together, only God really knows, man may have an idea of what's going on, but only God has the true answers.

I really can't answer your questions out of a scientific viewpoint, I'm not a scientist, I am just a Christian!

God bless you too ;)

Hello Brothers and sisters,

This is a very popular topic, but I must say the earth is not 6,000 years and no where in the Bible does it say that the Earth is 6000 years!. For those who said the Bible said the Earth is 6,000 years old is totally guessing. First of all, if we take a look at Luke Chapter 3:23-38. We can see the Family History of Jesus, if we add 30 more years and another 2,006 years. This is approximately 6,000 years. But brothers and sisters, this is where the flaw coming in. Since the Bible, (Words of God) DIDN'T NOT SAID that the Earth was created in 6,000. The earth however, is created from the First day and the 6th Day of God's creation. This don't give us an exact timeline of how many years it is in those 1-5 days. Human was created in day sixth!!! It could take God a 1 million to Light and darkness from Earth. We don't know how long is 1 day in God compare to us. So let not Guess and take our God name in vain. II Peter 3:8, just verify how small our limit of thinking is when it come to timeline.

Let recap. Back in Galileo time, People from the Church argue that the Sun go around the Earth base on what they think, and have no exact answer from God. Because of this many people was misleaded as the Bible being wrong and inaccurate. My advice is for the things that God didn't tell us exactly. Let not speculate and allow scientist to prove us wrong, and by doing people view God's words as unvaluable and isn't accurate. We can clearly see the flaw in the Universe was created in 6,000 years. We cannot conclude this because we do not know the specific timeline of the 1st through the 5th days of God's creation.

How old the earth is not important. What is important is I know my God is creater this universe. Give praise to him for he is Wonderful and Almighty.

May God Blesses you all brothers and siters

Not sure if this was mentioned, but a global flood would make the earth look billions of years old. Water has a way of changeing things by erosion. The drifting of the continents may have been done by a global flood.

That's more than true Fellowservant, I have watched an interesting set of DVD's concerning Creation versus Evolution by a Kent Hovind, he is an evangelist and I would gladly provide his website to anyone who would like to get a hold of these dvd's, they are a good source for clearing this mess in your mind evolutionists have started. Like I said to a friend recently, it's best if you watch those dvd's and ask God to lead your heart and mind, it is only one mans interpretation again, a very good interpretation if I may say so.

The one thing I'm against these days is the nature most "new age Christians" have, as I call them. They believe in God (not Jesus necessarily) but they think God started evolution, or is the source of evolution,

I see God like this, He says: Earth, and voila, earth is created in a nano second, the power God has is beyond the comprehension of any human mind, but a good way to start to learn the power of God is by thinking of things God is capable of, which is anything! He is the great I AM, not the great what you think I AM

God bless
Much love

Amen brother good post and insight...:star:

The earth is certainly billions of years old. The grand canyon for instance could not be carved in only thousands of years. Water is powerful, but not that powerful. Dinosaur fossils have dated back to millions of years ago - while the oldest human fossils are nowhere NEAR a million years. Therefor humans didn't live in the same time as the dinosaurs. I read a lot about the dating of fossils, and apparently there are at least a dozen methods to do it. All use different techniques, yet all yield the same result. I'm fairly certain after reading all of these articles that carbon dating and similar things are accurate to a few %. Usually 1% or so off is the common buffer they use.

Thanks for the help - and GOD bless

I believe we don't have enough resources to conclude that it is 6,000 years or 6 millions years. So don't get caught up on these topic and lose our focus. God Bless.

This is borderline putting more faith in science then faith in God. You believe God can save you from an eternal hell, yet you don't think he could have created the world in 6 simple days? God knows your thoughts, knows your heart and is omnipotent and almighty. God couldn't just carve the Grand canyon?

You think God would create the stars and not pull the light immediately from them to the earth?

The beginning was used to model the sabbath. You think almighty God needs to rest? Tell me how God worked 6 days and rested on the 7th (the sabbath) when we are talking about some obscure time measure not a day and somehow that models the sabbath for man?
The word "rested" in Gen 2:2 is is even the Hebrew word: shâbath.

As much as scientists can claim their equipment/methods to be accurate, many other scientists can disagree. Even if they don't, I could care less, the word of God is always 100% accurate.

Just like evolution, they claim it is scientific fact and again they have absolutely no backing for it. Still no proof after almost 150 years.

I completely understand why a person would take this view, but I think that as a Christian if you truly study the issue at hand, you will see that God is the almighty creator of the world in just 6 short days.

I believe we don't have enough resources to conclude that it is 6,000 years or 6 millions years. So don't get caught up on these topic and lose our focus. God Bless.

We definitely have the one resource that is important for understanding anything, the bible. The idea of ripping 2 Peter 3:8 so far out of context is to misunderstand God's word completely. We can't slip on these important issues when they are so clearly presented. A literal interpretation of Genesis 1 is so important. We don't budge for "science" when something is so clear in the bible.

Brothers we need to at least see the creation scientists point of view on this issue. I would recommend the following book:

In the Beginning: Compelling Evidence for Creation and the Flood, by Walt Brown

God Bless you both, I hope this post is a help and not a hindrance ;)

The bible is FULL of holes and contradictions, so I fail to see how "god" can be perfect. Since you'll deny this is true let me provide you with a link proving it IS true.

This is the only part I care to reply to. It is clear you do not have the spirit of God. Brothers we shouldn't let swine trample a pearl.

As stated I don't believe in god. If you care to reply WHY am I wrong please do so. The link shows where he found all the contradictions, you can open your bible to the exact spot - or use an e-bible. If you're telling me I need to believe in god to see that it's not a contradiction, well that's fairly laughable. It's written in plain text.
