For what gives you the right to make such a judgment? What do you have that God hasn't given you? And if everything you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift? Published in 1890, Acres of Diamonds by Russell Conwell, founder of Temple University, tells the tale of a prosperous Persian farmer who became discontent when he heard that diamonds could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. Selling everything, he traveled the world only to die in poverty. The man who bought his farm later found a diamond mine on that very land! Untold wealth had been right under the old farmer’s nose.
Like that ancient farmer, believers can miss the vast wealth they’re already sitting on. Paul says that God “has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3) and prays that “the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people” (Ephesians 1:18). No need to compare ourselves with others—we are all already wealthy beyond our wildest dreams in Christ!
Prayer: Gracious Father open the eyes of my heart that I may see Your riches in Christ!
