So it was, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel again played the harlot with the Baals, and made Baal-Berith their god. Thus the children of Israel did not remember the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side; nor did they show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal (Gideon) in accordance with the good he had done for Israel. Judges 8:33-35 NKJV

The people of Israel depended heavily on the faith and leadership of Gideon to carry them through the hardships they faced. But when Gideon passed away, it seemed like their faith died as well.

It’s impossible to support your faith through someone else. There must be a personal commitment in your heart to God that goes beyond what the crowd or a leader does.

Each choice you make today is an opportunity to take ownership of your faith and to decide where your allegiance remains. A supportive leader or Christian community can be extremely helpful in providing direction and encouragement, but you also need to decide whether you’re going to trust in God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. No one else can make that commitment for you, and the more you rely on others, the more likely you’ll give up when adversity hits or your relationships change.

Prayer: Lord, help me to rest fully in You, entrusting myself to Your care today and doing Your will.
