"because you have listened to the voice of the LORD your God, to keep all His commandments which I command you today, to do [what is] right in the eyes of the LORD your God. Deuteronomy 13:18
Moses had just finished giving the Israelites a list of tough, uncompromising laws from God, laws that to many people may have seemed unnecessarily harsh, even unreasonable. So Moses finished by saying, "Keep all His commandments which I command you today, to do {what is} right in the eyes of the LORD your God". In other words: just trust Him on these.
A number of things Jesus says in the New Testament--such as loving your enemies, or refusing to take revenge on those who wrong you--may seem illogical as well. So what do you do? Many Christians opt to simply ignore Christ's hard sayings and follow their own common sense, fulfilling Proverbs 21:2, which says, "Every way of a man is right in his own eyes."
But just because something seems right doesn't mean it is right. Proverbs 14:12 warns, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." Not surprisingly, God tells you, "My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways" (Isaiah 55:8).
Prayer: Father, help me to trust You and do what's right in Your eyes, not what's right in my own sight. Help me to follow Your ways, not my own.
