Thank you Brother @Jesus_is_LORD
Perhaps if we look at 'what is the opposite of happy?' , we might get a little closer? What do you think of that question to be asked, Brother?
Thanks again for the reply.
A few brothers have mentioned that happiness is different for everyone, but is that relevant for the discussion? I'm thinking out loud.
So one may be happy playing video games, another happy praying, another happy eating food, another happy reading a book;
regardless of what is causing the feeling of happiness, they are all happy.
So my focus in the OP is less about what is causing us to be happy but the fact that such an emotion/state of being is present. I don't think the emotion can be separated from the state of being totally (as God created us to have feelings) (God gets Joyful and Jesus also wept).
So for example, many things may cause someone to be fearful, some it could be dogs, others are afraid of the dark, other are afraid
to be embarrassed, but regardless of what is bringing about the emotion they are all having the same emotion of fear, although it could be rooted in different places (spirit, flesh, etc) and last for a different duration per person.
So with that said, the answer to your question about the opposite of happiness would be sadness, depression, hopelessness.
I would say happy is the broad umbrella of many positive feelings with other words having a greater emphasis.
For example under the umbrella of happy is the word excited, this word emphasizes one's high energy within that
state of being happy. Joyful is also under the umbrella of happy and joyful emphasizes a celebratory attitude, perhaps.
Now is sadness is the opposite of happy, I would say sadness would be the bigger umbrella with other words underneath that
which would put greater emphasis in other areas. So lonely would emphasize one's isolation being the root for the sadness.
Ashamed would emphasize ones embarrassment as the center of the sadness. And depression emphasizes ones lack of
motivation to be active or productive under the sadness umbrella.
It seems like when we are the opposite of happy, something is wrong (off, not what it should be). I say this because think about it. In heaven no one will every be sad,
we are told that God will wipe away every tear. So if sadness has no place in heaven, then it is not what we were made for. But
because this world is full of sin, we will experience those other feelings which we were not made to experience.
Because death is in the world people die and we experience grief. Because people are evil and intent to do us harm we experience fear
that we may be robbed. Because we are out of alignment with God and separated from His perfect WILL, we experience anxiety because we don't know the future. Etc, etc, etc. So to better help you with understanding happiness, I think it is a state that we were originally created to experience in God's presence perpetually, but in THIS world, sin leads us to experience lots of other feelings.
However God still uses them for God's glory and our good. The feeling of guilt can lead one to repentance, the need for patience shown by being frustrated can lead us to be more empathetic and patient to others having experienced their suffering as well. -- So what are your thoughts on that?
