Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12

On this day in 1943, German college students and siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl, leaders of the resistance group The White Rose, were arrested by the Gestapo for distributing pamphlets criticizing Hitler and the Nazi regime. They were tried in a kangaroo court reserved for political dissidents and beheaded five days later, their young lives cut short because of their willingness to stand against tyranny.

Inspired by their parents’ outspoken criticism of the Nazis, Hans and Sophie chose nonviolent resistance; even though they knew it could lead to their deaths. They looked at the world around them, saw injustice, rallied their Lutheran principles and their courage, and acted.

A key marker of a man of God, whether young or old, is a love of justice. Over and over, the Bible calls God’s people “to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow” (Isaiah 1:17).

Along these lines, the apostle John asked a probing question: “Whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?” (1 John 3:17). No matter your age, what will you do with what God has given you?
