Dispensationalism And Christian Scholasticism

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3: 5-6

The site above quotes Solzhenitsyn as saying in his 1978 Harvard
speech that "There are telltale symptoms by which history gives
warning to a threatened or perishing society. Such are, for instance,
a decline of the arts or a lack of great statesmen. Indeed, sometimes
the warnings are quite explicit and concrete....How did the West
decline from its triumphal march to its present debility? Have there
been fatal turns and losses of direction in its development? It does
not seem so. The West kept advancing steadily in accordance with its
proclaimed social intentions, hand in hand with a dazzling progress in
technology. And all of a sudden it found itself in its present state
of weakness.....The humanistic way of thinking, which had proclaimed
itself our guide, did not admit the existence of intrinsic evil in
man, nor did it see any task higher than the attainment of happiness
on earth. It started modern Western civilization on the dangerous
trend of worshiping man and his material needs......"

It would seem from these statements by Solzhenitsyn that the United
States and Europe in 1978 had become degenerate and fixated on the
flesh, feelings, desires, conditioning and pride as self-esteem
without help from the psychologists, psychiatrists and sociologists of
the Transformational Marxist Frankfurt School. But this loss of spirituality and failure to
see the intrinsic evil in man may have been the condition in the
United States that allowed transformational Marxism to have the large
influence on our institutions it has had during the second half of the
20th century, and on into the 21st century..

Transformational Marxism and the popularity of the dialectic as a way of argument and as an attitude and behavior change procedure became popular in America after the fifties because - in part - of the previous falling away into humanism and Christian scholasticism.

In 1978 Solzhenitsyn was warning the West that humanism in general had
been undermining the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was not talking about Transformational Marxism or the Frankfurt School in particular.

Remember that B.F. Westcott and F.J.A. Hort in The New Testament in the Original Greek. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1881, An Introduction and Appendix, said that the Bible must be treated like any other old book. This is a starting assumption of Christian humanism or Christian scholasticism. The problem with starting from the assumption that the Bible is just like any other old book is that the meaning of Scripture is given by the Holy Spirit.

The starting assumption of Westcott and Hort, that the Bible must be treated like any old book, has been accepted by many or most Christian academics, who dispensationalists call the "scholars."

Christian humanism, or Christian scholasticism, developed out of the French Revolution of 1789-1799, which made big changes in Western Civilization, culture and eventually in Christianity.

You can see the differences in interpretation of scripture from the commentaries of John Gill, for example, an English Baptist, who lived from 1697 to 1771 - before humanism influenced Christianity - to the very late 19th century and early 20th century after the 1909 publication of the Scofield Reference Bible, after the influence began from humanism.

Humanism caused many Christians to begin to question the absolute truth of scripture, and to want to change the interpretations of scripture to fit man's ideas. Humanism encouraged Christians to lean unto thine their own understanding, contrary to Proverbs 3: 5.

Leaning to man's own understanding did not, in the 19th century, necessarily mean exalting the flesh in some way, such as in drinking, or in having sex outside of the bonds of a heterosexual relationship in marriage. In the late 19th century humanism did not necessarily lead Christians to follow Darwin or Freud. In fact the Southern Baptists, when they began to adapt dispensationalism, called it "fundamentalism."

But 19th century humanism, when taken into Christianity, led to a questioning of the absolute truths from God, and to encourage some Christian leaders to compromise that absolute set of truths known as the Gospel.

Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910), Ellen G. White (1827-1915), Edward Irving (1792 –1834), John Darby (1800 -1882), Charles T. Russell (1852-1916),
and and C.I. Scofield (1843 -1921) were some of the major false prophets of the 19th century who influenced Christians. The most
influential 19th century false doctrines were the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Mormons, Christian Science and Dispensationalism.. Dispensationalism became the most popular of these 19th century movements and took over, by the mid 20th century, the majority of protestant denominations.Leaning to man's understanding helped lead to false Christian doctrines. But to determine what is false doctrine those doctrines must be shown to be false by scripture. The partial cause of false doctrines - Christian humanism in general - must be understood as something separate from the false doctrines taught as a partial result of that humanism.

False doctrine is that doctrine which contradicts parts of the Gospel of Christ, where that Gospel is the whole counsel of God of Acts 20:27. The Gospel is not limited to the few doctrines Paul lists in I Corinthians 15: 1-8, which some churches now use as support for their doctrine saying that Christians do not have to follow the "non-essentials." Many false doctrines originate in teaching that parts of the Old Covenant were not done away with, and that Old Covenant Israel remains the chosen people of God by their physical descent from Abraham.

Some of the relevant scriptures that are contradicted in false doctrines about the continuation of the Old Covenant and Israel of the flesh are Romans 2: 17, 24,28-29, Romans 9: 6-8, Romans 10: 12, Romans 11: 5, 17-20, Galatians 3: 3, 16, 26-29, Galatians 4:24-26, Hebrews 10: 1, Colossians 2: 16-17, Hebrews 10: 9, John 10: 16 and Romans 12: 4-5.

Christian humanism sees scripture through the lens of man's flesh, that is, it looks at scripture from two part man, body and mind, without man's spirit, from the Holly Spirit. In this way Christian humanism tends to keep its followers in the spiritual condition of the natural man of I Corinthians 2: 14, who does not discern the things of the Spirit.

The Old Covenant dealt with literal things, things of the flesh. There was the physical descent from Abraham - from Abraham's physical DNA - that defined the chosen people. Those not of the bloodline could join Old Covenant Israel, but they were kind of second class citizens. There was circumcision, which as in the flesh of the men. Animal sacrifice was physical, and so were the feast days to be celebrated. The temple was a physical building.

When God changed Old Covenant Israel - turned Jerusalem upside down - he remade Israel as a spiritual house, and as Hebrews 10: 9 says he did away with the Old Covenant, with its physical things. Hebrews 10: 1 says the law, by which is meant the institution of animal sacrifice, circumcision, feast days, etc, was a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things. Colossians 2: 16-17 goes on to say that the food ordinances, holydays, new moons, and sabbath days were shadows of things to come, but the substance is Christ. Paul argues against circumcision in several places, such as Acts 15: 2, I Corinthians 7:18, Galatians 5: 2, Galatians 6: 12, and Philippians 3: 2-8. In Acts 7: 48 Stephen says the most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, and Paul in I Corinthians 3 16-17 says Christians are now the temple of God, and in I Corinthians 6: 19 he teaches the the bodies of Christians are the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Here are the main Old Testament prophecies on the transformation of Old Covenant Israel into a spiritual house.

"And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab: and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down." II Kings 21: 13

"Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?" Isaiah 29: 16

"The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
2. Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.
3. Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.
4. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
5. Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
6. O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel." Jeremiah 18: 1-6

"And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God." Hosea 2: 23

Peoples who were not of the bloodline from Abraham were to be brought into the Israel of God, but not as second class citizens.

"The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts." Haggai 2: 9

"This latter house" is the New Covenant in Christ Jesus. The former was the Old Covenant, which Hebrews 10: 9 says Christ took away so that he could establish the New Covenant.

"Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ." I Peter 2: 5

The glory of the latter house, the New Covenant, is greater than the former., the Old Covenant.. And the latter house is a spiritual house built with living stones...1Corinthians 3:16 says "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? "

"To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:" Colossians 1: 27

The hope of glory is Christ in you. This is something spiritual, not literal, since Christ does not come down and enter into our bodies.

"My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you," Galatians 4: 19 " Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." Philippians 2: 5

"And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:" Ephesians 2: 6

In the flesh we do not literally sit with Christ in heavenly places. Again, his is something spiritual: it means we are raised up spiritually to a higher level and are with Christ.

Revelation 14: 1 says the 144,000 - and again using metaphoric language, are seen standing on Mount Sion with Christ. This is not literal, that they are, in the flesh still, standing on what was called Mount Sion in Palestine with Christ. It means they are raised up to a higher level in the Spirit, and are with Christ and he in them. They follow Christ wherever he leads them (14: 4).

Revelation 21:23-24: " And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. "

On the wall in Revelation 21:12-14: " And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb." The wall is part of the spiritual house that I Peter 2: 5 mentions. The wall is not part of a literal city.

When the spiritual house is complete then as in 1 Peter 2:5 "Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ" that wall and the New Jerusalem of Revelation 21 2 is complete. The lively stones, the Jew Jerusalem, and the wall are all metaphors for Christians raised up into a spiritual state in Christ.

To literalize all these metaphors is to diminish that spirituality of transformed Israel and to make it into the fables of I Timothy1: 4, I Timothy 4: 7 and II Timothy 4: 4. Two part man - man in Christian humanism - who has not risen out of the condition of the natural man of I Corinthians 2: 14 - does not understand these kinds of metaphors and rejects them. They must be literal for him.

And "And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.." Daniel 12: 3

Amen @ the spiritual house!

The central issue confronting the last generation is related to the identity of Jesus Christ, and the identity of the believers, in relationship to him. Those who teach that “Israel” is a flesh and blood construct, existing side by side with the so called “Church” under the New Covenant, are in a lethal error. The Scriptures plainly state there is one body (Ephesians 4:4) of saved individuals based upon Spiritual regeneration in Christ (“ye must be born again”), and that body was chosen by the LORD, and consistently identified with Israel.

Greetings,
a little deeper men and we might draw out the wisdom we receive,

Romans 3:9-31 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; 10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17 And the way of peace have they not known: 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. 19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time His righteousness: that He might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. 29 Is He the God of the Jews only? is He not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: 30 Seeing it is one God, Which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Galatians 3:21-29 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. 22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. 23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Bless you ....><>
