And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing [Him] were astonished, saying, "Where [did] this Man [get] these things? And what wisdom [is] this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! Mark 6:2
The people of Nazareth knew Jesus as the son of Mary. They couldn't see Him as the Messiah. Hadn't He been a playmate for their children? How could this former village boy have the power to heal? And where did He discover such wisdom?
The phrase "You can never go home again" suggests that when you leave home and return wiser and more skilled, there'll be those who only connect their memories to someone younger and less wise. The people of Nazareth struggled with that about Jesus.
His former neighbors speculated about Him. You can almost hear them whispering words behind their hands that betrayed envy, malice, and gossip. Jesus was aware that He had no honor in His hometown nor His childhood home.
Jesus faced criticism, so He understands the way you feel when you're criticized. He knows what goes through your mind. So when you feel left out, gossiped about, or belittled for following God's plan for you, remember that you face each trouble with Jesus.
Prayer: God, forgive me when I think You could never understand the things I face. This reminds me that Your Son suffered so that He knows what I'm suffering. Thank You for taking action to connect my pain with Your comfort.
