Did Jesus Care About the Environment?

Jesus says, "Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin. And yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these" Matthew 6:28-29. This is perhaps the greatest environmental awareness statement in human history, spoken when environmental issues weren't even on the public radar.

Apparently Jesus is referring to wild lilies, that grow wild in Israel. He may also be referring to what is called a "star of David" lily, which also grows wild in Israel. He says this in context of wild flowers growing in the grass, rather than the cultured lilies found in flower shops today.

This statement by Jesus indicates he was highly in tune with what modern science calls "nature" and what is correctly called "creation". It demonstrates the supreme brilliance of Jesus, who makes the greatest environmental statement and greatest statement on faith known to history, in just a couple of sentences. Jesus frequently packs several profound concepts within a few short simple sentences; he is by far the greatest teacher in history.

Did God create our enviroment? Yes. Do we regularly do harm to it? Yes. Is nature able to heal itself from man's destructive practices that it does to it? Yes, if given the chance. Did God create humans? Yes. Do we regularly do harm to humans? Yes. Are humans able to heal from that harm pushed onto us? Yes, but it takes time just like with nature. Why does God put up with humans who do these things? Why does He put up with you or I?
