Did David Make a New Command?

"For who will heed you in this matter? But as his part [is] who goes down to the battle, so [shall] his part [be] who stays by the supplies; they shall share alike." 1 Samuel 30:24 NKJV

The Bible contains more than 31,000 verses. So, when a question comes up that we can’t answer in the immediate context, it’s helpful to look elsewhere. So, what about the verse and question above? Sorry, no, but David did something else much more important.

Four hundred years earlier, Moses commanded, “and divide the plunder into two parts, between those who took part in the war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation.” (Numbers 31:27).

A generation later, Joshua commanded, “Return to your homes with your great wealth—with large herds of livestock, with silver, gold, bronze and iron, and a great quantity of clothing—and divide the plunder from your enemies with your fellow Israelites” (Joshua 22:8 NIV).

So, what important something did David do? He knew the five books of Moses and the book of Joshua, took their commands to heart, and (mostly) obeyed them.

Prayer: Lord, You want me to know Your commands for believers today, to take them to heart, and to obey them. That’s why I’m reading this daily devotional. Thanks for today’s encouragement.

Hello brother,

David did do as Moses and Joshua commanded by dividing the spoil between all the soldiers that were involve in a successful victory. David was told by God to go and overtake the Amelekites and he would be victorious. David had 600 men, all of whom were likely heavy laden with provision, arms, and other equipment. The 200 that became lame or faint would have fought but for their physical inability to proceed. Likely, the 200 lame soldiers served a greater purpose in the ultimate victory over the Amelekites for which the 400 fighting soldiers gave them credit, that is: the 200 likely lessened the burden of the 400, freeing the 400 up from some of their burdensome provisions and equipment and guarding it as their own. Campare this with military units of today: all play vital roles of victory in battle, e.g., intelligence, infantry, armored, artillery, air support, communications, etc, and all are equally compensated according to rank.

The KJV says David made a new statute and an ordinance. Be that as it may, David was merely fulfilling the spirit of that which Moses and Joshua commanded by law.

Blessings
