Counterfeit is one of satans tactics that is well known in Christianity. It goes all the way back to the original rebellion of satan. (Is. 14:14) "I will be like the most High". satan couldn't do any better than being 'like' the most High. he could never be like the most High, but he wanted to make that appearance. And so he makes his appearance as an angel of light. (2 Cor. 11:14). A counterfeit.
satan never comes to one and says, 'follow me, and you and I can share hell together'. No, he establishes a system close to the real thing. An imitation. The whole point of counterfeit is to make it appear as much like the real thing as you can. In other words, counterfeiters don't print 3 dollar bills. They print 5, 10's, or 20's. But within the counterfeit is laced the lie.
satans tactics do not change. They don't need to. he is very good at what he does, and it works quite well. Notice (Acts 5:34-39) . Here the apostles are brought before the Council of priests and pharisees for preaching Christ. Then one highly respected pharisee, Gamaliel, spoke up. He warned this council to be very careful how you deal with these men, for you may find yourself fighting against God. (5:35)
He then calls them to remember something not to distant past. There was another, like this Christ, who was named Theudas. (Acts 5:36) He too claimed to be somebody and gathered a following, but in the end he and his following were all slain and brought to nothing. Point being, God was not in it as it came to nothing.
After Theudas another rose up. He is called Judas of Galillee. He too gathered a following drew away a lot of folk, who also perished, and came to nothing. (Acts 5:37) But notice the time period of when this Judas rose up. "in the days of the taxing" What other event occurred in the days of the taxing? Christ birth into the human race. (Luke 2:1-7) In other words satan saw it coming. What does he do? he raises up counterfeits to look like something from God but they are not. The people get used to hearing of these people claiming to be something but are not so that when the real comes along, they are already in a state of rejection. They have seen the false so many times that when the real comes along they reject it.
So that in the very days when the Messiah was entering on the scene, satan was raising up a false impression to affect peoples minds against Him later. Counterfeiting can take on many shades. To present oneself as real when you are not. Or, to present one as false as to distract from the real when He appears.
Praise God He has given believers His Spirit to discern in these areas. And most especially to some the gift of discernment of spirits.
