Hi Brothers and Sisters,
Please could someone explain to me what Colossians 2:15 is all about?
How did 'Jesus on the cross disarm the rulers and authorities'. What did he say, how did he do that?
And how did he have victory over them? In what way? Was it 'by making a public show of satan'? What does that exactly mean?
Thank you. :)

The cost of sin is death. Everyone who ever sinned, has to die. That's pretty much everyone who ever lived, except for Jesus.

Col 2:13; When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,
Col 2:14; having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Col 2:15; When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.

Jesus was the only person who never sinned, so death had no power over Him. Yet He died in our place. The rules of death were broken.
Jesus "canceled out' the death sentence against us because of our sins. Satan had the authority and keys to death and hell. But Satan lost that authority...
First Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days being tempted by Satan,( Mark 1:13; ) yet He never sinned.( Heb 4:15; ) So He defeated Satan there, but that wasn't the end of it.
Then Jesus died on the cross... innocent and sinless. But since death had no power of a sinless man, Jesus was resurrected (in the flesh).

Rev 1:17; When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last,
Rev 1:18; and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.

One of the ways Satan was disarmed... was Jesus took the keys of death and Hades from him.

Another way Jesus won victory was destroying "death" for us.

1Cor 15:54; But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory.
1Cor 15:55; "O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?"
1Cor 15:56; The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;
1Cor 15:57; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

There is a belief by many (but not all) Christians that there was a place called Sheol. this had two halves separated by a chasm (this is the story of Lazarus and the rich man)
The saints were on one side, and the wicked were on the other side. They were captives there in Sheol waiting to be rescued. Satan had the keys.

Eph 4:8; Therefore it says, "WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN."
Eph 4:9; (Now this expression, "He ascended," what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth?
Eph 4:10; He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)

When Jesus died, He descended into the lower parts of the earth, the dominion of Satan. He rescued the captives and freed them from Sheol. No saints go there anymore.

Jesus was nailed to the cross by Roman soldiers, and His tomb was guarded by Roman soldiers. When Jesus was resurrected, He walked the earth for 40 days. (Acts 1:3; )

So yes Jesus disarmed Satan, he no longer has authority over death and hades. It is thought that when "prisoners" (saints in Sheol) disappeared, everyone knew who took them.
When Satan lost his authority, everyone knew who took it. But not only those in Sheol, but also those on the earth. Jesus walked freely for 40 days amongst the Roman and
Jewish authorities, but they either didn't or could not stop it (hey, we already killed this guy once, what's the deal?) So it is likely talking about these rulers and authorities
as well as the ones in Sheol.

I think this will show a little light. Jesus had not received all power yet until He finish his mission. On the cross He said: "It is Finish" The mission God the Father had given Him. And when He rose from the Grave He receive "ALL Power in Heaven and that is in the Cosmos" from His Father! "ALL AUTHORITY" remember Everything that exists is a creation of "THE ALMIGHTY GOD", GOD does not live in HIS creation, His place [ zip code ] is "ETERNITY"

A portion of His prayer to God The Father in (John 17) before he died on the cross.

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

And when He rose from the grave, Then He received all Authority in heaven and on earth from His Father.

Matthew 11:27
All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son, and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

Matthew 26:64
"You have said it yourself," Jesus answered. "But I say to all of you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."

Luke 1:33
and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end!"

John 3:31
The One who comes from above is above all. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks as one from the earth. The One who comes from heaven is above all.

John 3:35
The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in His hands.

Acts 10:36
He has sent this message to the people of Israel, proclaiming the gospel of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.

Romans 14:9
For this reason Christ died and returned to life, so that He might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

1 Corinthians 15:27
For "God has put everything under His feet." Now when it says that everything has been put under Him, this clearly does not include the One who put everything under Him. [meaning GOD the FATHER].

Ephesians 1:20
which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms,

Ephesians 1:21
far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come.

Christians must remember this: "Jesus has received "ALL Authority in Heaven and the COSMOS" ALL Authority! There is not Battle between SATAN and JESUS! Micheal the ARC-ANGEL has more power than satan! understand what the word "ALL AUTHORITY" means! Who do we think is going to bring a chain from Heaven and bound satan and cast him unto a pit? Jesus is not a ANGEL! HE is The ONLY begotten Son Of GOD! GOD only has to speak! and It comes to pass! and the SON and THE FATHER are ONE! What ever THE Father does the SON does also! He acts just like His [Father].

19Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

Jesus had no misconception or liking of the rulers of the day . He wasn't talking about the Roman's, he was referring to the leaders of the Jews...the Pharisees and the Saduchees which he called "a den of vipers"! They had no concept of resurrection and were evil. With the growing numbers of believers, these "vipers" had less importance and were looked down upon!

In the previous verse Josephine, It says that he cancelled the written code, which is the law. Satan uses the law to condemn us, without it there is no sin. Jesus took our sin to the cross and crucified it and in doing that he triumphed over the enemy. We now have the facility to have our sins washed away by the blood of Jesus, freeing us from Satan's hold over us. So he disarmed them by taking away their weapon, the law.

Imagine an army victory parade. There's a huge procession through the streets with the defeated enemy paraded upfront and the winning soldiers following behind and the General sitting on a chariot drawn by four magnificent horses.

That's the kind of image Paul had in mind for his reader: the powers of death and sin marched around the city in chains.

Trevor is exactly right but Jesus did not do away with the Law, he fulfilled it! He was the embodiment of the law because He was the only one who could complete the Law and do it perfectly 24/7. He fulfilled the law by ushering in the New Covenant which did away with written Codes and established salvation not by a code but by Grace for all of those who believed.
Though, in the day, He was against the Romans, his battle was mainly with the Temple Leaders, the Pharisees and Saduchees...they too were against the Roman Empire but , worse, they did not believe in Jesus and supported the Mosaic Law for their salvation!
