Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land." Exodus 1:10 ESV

The Egyptian king thought in terms of strategy and dominance. He forgot that the Israelites were invited as guests. Their guest status had been revoked at some past point, and they became slave labor. The king likely found it difficult to think about what it would be like without the labor of Joseph’s family (which numbered more than two million people).

God had thoughts of His own, and they were solidly in the deliverance camp. Moses was His choice for spokesperson. God was aware of Pharaoh’s thinking. This king thought through his options and concluded that the best response was harshness. The people needed to know he was in control. But he wasn’t.

This king put his trust in chariots, horses, and the might of men to enforce his will. God would take the weakness of a different man, a man afraid to speak, and save a nation that had endured slavery for far too long.

What are you holding on to even after knowing that it doesn’t match God’s plan? Why is His thinking more important on any subject?

Prayer: Lord God, You’ve done big things. You’re doing big things. You’ll continue to do big things. May I never stand in the way of Your next Big Thing.
