But they did not listen, and Manasseh led them astray to do more evil than the nations had done whom the LORD destroyed before the people of Israel. 2 Kings 21:9 ESV
It’s possible to think that freedom means doing anything you want without restrictions. If that’s how you think of freedom, you may be thinking too small. Manasseh was a king who thought freedom meant keeping himself at arm’s length from God. He persuaded others to follow his lead. This thinking would allow children to eat candy at every meal. It would mean students could give wrong answers without any penalty on their score. It would mean people could get a job, never show up, and still be paid.
Freedom is best found knowing what your purpose is. When you make that discovery, you’re free to do everything that helps you accomplish what God made you to do. One freedom moves you to what’s important while the other typically leads to chaos and distress.
Celebrate independence from those things that stunt your spiritual growth. Be grateful that your freedom can keep you from making mistakes and from continuing to make those mistakes.
There’s freedom in Christ. But if you believe He has a plan for your life, then that freedom means you’re released to do what you were created to do.
Prayer: I want to be free, God. I don’t want to be irresponsible. Help me discover the freedom that comes when I choose to follow You with my whole heart.
