Captivity Captive

When the Old Testament saints died they went to a place called “Hades”. This is also the same place Jesus went after his death on the cross as Peter mentions here talking about Jesus....

Act 2:27 For you will not abandon my soul to HADES, or let your Holy One see corruption.

The Greek word “HADES” is the equivalent Hebrew word “Sheol”.
Hades had two separate parts to it, one being “paradise also known as Abraham's bosom”, and the other hell a place of torment. There was a “great” gulf that separated the two from each other.(Luke 16: 26) Jesus gives us an account of two people who one went to “Abraham's bosom, and the other to the place of torment.

Luke 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into ABRAHAM'S BOSOM: the rich man also died, and was buried;
Luke 16:23 And IN HELL he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

Scripture supports that Hades included both HELL and PARADISE (Abraham’s bosom, or what Jesus and many of the everyday Jews of his day referred to as Paradise).

Jesus visited both parts of Hades. Jesus told the thief on the cross that he would be with him in paradise that day. (Luke 23:43) The word, “PARADISE” is a word the Greeks borrowed from the Persians which means, “a garden, park, or enclosure full of all the vegetable products of the earth.” In other words a nice place.

The Hell side is where Jesus took the keys of hell, and death away from Satan.

Rev 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and HAVE THE KEYS OF HELL AND OF DEATH.

We can be sure that Jesus did NOT “E-mail” Satan to ,”Would you please Fed-X me the keys of hell and of death to this address!!!” The Devil does not “cough up” anything of his own free choice, the keys of hell and death had to be taken by force, and that only by going there could that be done!!!

Some believe that “Paradise” was in Heaven itself at this time, but that can not be possible as Jesus told Mary after his resurrection...

John 20:17 Jesus saith unto her, touch me not; FOR I AM NOT YET ASCENDED TO MY FATHER.....

In the book of Ephesians we find this.....

Eph 4:7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
Eph 4:8 Wherefore he saith, WHEN HE ASCENDED UP ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVITY CAPTIVE, and gave gifts unto men.
Eph 4:9 (Now that HE ASCENDED, WHAT IS IT BUT THAT HE ALSO DESCENDED FIRST INTO THE LOWER PARTS OF THE EARTH?
Eph 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

Notice: Jesus descended into the lower “PARTS” (plural) of the earth, not the lower “PART” (singular)
Jesus went to Hell to take back the keys of hell, and of death, and he also went into paradise to get all
the old Testament Saints who were looking forward to the coming Messiah. It was not until Jesus
ascended into Heaven was the way into the Father presence made open!!

Heb 9:8 By this THE HOLY SPIRIT POINTS OUT THAT THE WAY INTO THE [TRUE HOLY OF] HOLIES IS NOT YET THROWN OPEN as long as the former [the outer portion of the] tabernacle remains a recognized institution and is still standing, (AMP)

Who were the people that Jesus took with him in his ascension?

Eph 4:8 Wherefore he saith, when he ascended up on high, HE LED CAPTIVITY CAPTIVE, and gave gifts unto men.

It was a common practice for the Romans to “PARADE” their enemies through the streets as a sign of victory over their foes. This was not a common practice of the nation of Israel as God told them to totally destroy all of their enemies completely, (Deut 20: 16-18) so Jesus would NOT have done this. Besides Jesus did NOT lead his enemies into Heaven!!

There are two ways in which to make people “CAPTIVE”. The first way would be to “FORCE” someone to do something they do not want to do. They become a slave and have no choice in what they do. This is exactly how we the Church were before Jesus came to set us free from our own bondage to sin. We were held “CAPTIVE” to sin.

The second way to make people “CAPTIVE” is to “CAPTIVATE” them!!!! The words, “CAPTIVITY CAPTIVE” is what Jesus did as he “CAPTIVATED CAPTIVITY" This is what these two words captivity captive means.

The easiest way to describe what this means is to use something we are all familiar with. When you were young, do you remember your first love? Maybe it was young man who was absolutely gorgeous to your eyes, and his looks “CAPTIVATED “ your heart, and that was all you thought about every day.
Maybe it was a young women who to you was drop dead gorgeous, and her beauty “CAPTIVATED” your heart, and you followed her around like a puppy dog, just wanting to be near her all the time willfully! We the Church know what it is to be captivated by the Love of Jesus, but the Old Testament saints did not, but they know now!!!

This is how Jesus captivated his captives, which were all those in Abraham's bosom (paradise) as he led them to his Heavenly Father!!! Paradise was moved from the regions of Hades to Heaven itself with all of its occupants!!!!

Not only was paradise moved with all of it occupants into the Fathers presence, Jesus also brought us his Church into the exact same place when he ascended to his Father. God was not going to allow any of his saints Old or New Testament to experience anything with out all the Church experiencing the same thing together!!!!!

Heb 11:40 Because God had us in mind and had something better and greater in view for us, so that they [these heroes and heroines of faith] should not come to perfection apart from us [before we could join them]. (AMP)

Did God raise us up together with Jesus in his ascension? What does the Bible say?

Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Eph 2:6 And HATH RAISED US UP TOGETHER, AND MADE US SIT TOGETHER IN HEAVENLY PLACES IN CHRIST JESUS:

Why do we not believe this, and miss out on one of the greatest blessing that God could ever give us?
