By his wind the heavens were made fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?" Job 26:13-14 ESV
Job felt the pain and suffering in his life with sharp clarity, and he wrestled with the mystery of his losses despite never sinning against God. As he turned his gaze outward to the rest of the world, he found more of the same: mysteries that gave only a dim idea of God’s purpose and presence. That left him with a choice. Would he walk away from a God beyond his understanding, or would he hold on in faith that God’s goodness would finally be revealed to him?
There’s a good chance you’re not suffering in the same ways as Job, but you surely have your own mysteries to ponder and moments of suffering and loss to endure. Can you always settle on a tidy explanation for the dark moments of life? More than likely you’ll end up in the same place as Job. Yet his story of perseverance is a reminder that you can wait on the Lord, even beyond what you think you can bear, and find God—even if you don’t find the answers you seek.
Prayer: Lord, help me to endure suffering and trust in You despite the mysteries of life.
