One anecdote
My parents have long passed and my sister inherited my mom's diamond wedding ring. She wears it daily. One time she visited us and slept in the guestroom. After returning home she emails us and tells us she forgot it on the guestroom nightstand. We search the nightstand and the guestroom inside out and there is no ring.
Two and a half to three years later after many guestroom cleanings and other guests using the room, I find a ring smack in the middle of the nightstand. I had forgotten about this and called the most recent guest but they diligently check the nightstand whenever they leave and never put or saw a ring there. Checking old emails refreshed my memory about the missing ring. We returned it to my sister to her great surprise and joy.
