My friend believes in Calvinism(God chooses an elect people to be save) and this is what he told me to back his belief up. Tell me your thoughts on this please.
Jeremiah 13:23
Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.
says you cant do good when you are used to doing evil
2 Timothy 2:25-26
25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth and they may come to their senses
so you can't turn to God or be good on your own....God "may grant" you repentance and let you come to your senses
John 6:37 and 6:44
John 6:37
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
John 6:44
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
no one can come to Me unless the Father draws them
no can be saved unless God draws them..it says that
and all that come to Jesus WILL be saved
so if God draws you, you WILL be saved
so you cant say that you can say no when God draws you
Paul makes it clear in Romans 9 with Jacob and Esau that God didn't respect Jacob more than Esau.."for they had neither done good nor bad" God chose Jacob out of his sovereign will, and thats why Paul says "who are you to question God"
it specifically says in verse 11 that it was just by God's choice and "NOT BECAUSE OF THEIR WORKS" and if people say that God is not Just (verse 14) verse 15 says " I will have mercy on whoever I have mercy"
Paul was talking about election
he knew that by saying this, like about Jacob and Esau, that people would say that God is not just...that is why he said that in verse 14
like if i say God chose this person and He might not choose that person, you are going to say, "is God not just"
that HAS to be what he's talking about because he knew that question already
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
well in that verse you have to look at the word "willing"
if it was Gods' will for all to be saved...all would be saved
that word is better translated "wishes"
it also says that God takes to pleasure in the destruction of the wicked
and in romans 9 it tells us why, if it doesn't please God, that he lets people go to hell
it says "what if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make his power known, ENDURED WITH MUCH PATIENCE vessels of wrath prepared for destruction" romans 9:22
God lets people go to hell because is shows His power, and it also makes the elect appreciate His mercy even more
and that even says that they are prepared for destruction
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
the world as a whole and that verse is true....whoever believes will be saved...but the only ones that will believe are the elect...that goes back to those verses in John
