Born again and Baptism, What's the connection?

When a person says today that they are 'born again', it's shorthand for saying something like - 'I have personally recieved Jesus Christ as my Lord and saviour and have now begun a new life in him.' And as long as everybody knows that's what we mean everything is good.

But there is a key question: are we using the phrase today in the same way that Jesus used it in his conversation with Nicodemus? What did Jesus actually mean Nicodemus to understand, how does the idea fit into the conversation and into the wider context of the way John gives his account of the gospel?
I still use the phrase the same!

@Butch5
Greetings Butch5,

Thank you for sharing what you have so far in this thread.
You wrote about the words of Jesus on the cross to one of the other two men being crucified at the same time.
You presented a case for the wording of the verse about being with Him in Paradise being in error due to the placing of a comma in the wrong place.

While this thread is not about that particular point, it has been brought up in discussion as somehow pertaining to the subject of the thread, being the connection with/to/between Baptism and Born Again.

I think it would be sensible to take up the subject of that 'Comma' on another thread.
Could you please indicate if you would like to start such a thread?

================================

In relation to this thread, may i suggest that the word rendered 'today' which can also be 'this day' carries much more than perhaps we have given credit to.
All the knowledge and thought and talk etc about both Born Again and Baptism must pivot on 'this day' or else be of little use or benefit to anybody, in any age.
I add that here because the subject was raised. And i extend this to all who read.

any feedback or replies are welcome

Bless you ....><>

You just don't get it!!!...comma,comma, comma. It's not about a comma, before, after or in between...It is the word of God, which is Jesus, and how He relates to us with in the confines of the New Covenant! For sure, the Thief is in Heaven with Jesus as we speak,...why are you in such denial? Go back and ask God for help!!!

Greetings,

are you addressing me?

If so, please do not get too presumptuous

This topic [about the comma] has been floating around since way, way, way before the internet times. It is usually presented as it has been thus far and the discussion gets going around things that usually do not help anybody to see what Scripture actually teaches. Some get all defensive and claim what they believe because that is what they believe, others get all suggestive that they are more learned and thereore they have a better understanding BUT it is something that is also used by some groups, as a part of their overall mark [and claim] of being different and more elite than the mainsteam professing Christian and the denominations etc.

Please understand that getting all upset about discussing it will not help anyone who encounters it to know what is what. Not a good place to leave people.

What can you tell us about that day? It does make a huge difference. And, it is really only more beautiful - seeing the way in which our God is the conductor of a magnificent symphony that you and i have been invited to partake in, by His grace and love, in Jesus Christ the Lord

please post prayerfully [ie, after praying and then some] Other people's walk can be effected by what we professing Christians write and how we interact with one another.
The time is short and perhaps even to the point that some may not have the luxury that many thus far have had to have time to squander in deliberations and the like before accepting the forgiveness we have become so acquainted with.

Proverbs 30:6 Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar. 2 Timothy 3:1-17. Worth a read. bless you.

I ignorantly have no idea what the argument is here. I thought this was a forum of people coming together who love Jesus. Seems to be bickering about semantics. Maybe this site is not for me.

No argument...some want to criticize punctuation, doesn't change God's word one bit!

Thats what you said on many occasions. What does that supposed to mean? And , "one doesn't interpret the text ,God does.
People interpret what they read and what the here. Someone say something, you interpret what they mean. Here is Websters definition of the word interpret.

: to explain or tell the meaning of : present in understandable terms

Like I said, you just don't get it! God's word means nothing to the unbeliever. Once Born Again, it is the Holy Spirit that interprets scripture...not you!!!
