Blameless vs. Walking With God

The youth pastor did the sermon today at church since our pastor is still on a mission trip. Today, he covered walking with God. His text was in Genesis 5 and was mainly about Enoch. We all know that Enoch never died. It is common knowledge that he was taken up into Heaven by God. In fact, this is the main thing I remember learning about him. However, something else was pointed out today that I never really thought of.

If you look, Genesis 5 is all about genealogy. It is the boring part that most of us will just scan or maybe even skip over. However, the part of Enoch is interesting. The pattern for everybody else is:

A) They lived 'x' years
B) They had a son
C) They lived 'y' more years
D) They died and lived a total of 'z' years

Enoch does not follow this pattern at all.

Enoch lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Methuselah. Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.

Enoch:

A) lived 'x' years
B) had a son
C) walked with God 'y' years
D) lived 'z' years before being taken up by God

Enoch was obviously taken up by God because of his righteousness.

By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death; AND HE WAS NOT FOUND BECAUSE GOD TOOK HIM UP; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God.

The Greek used to describe his "witness" is martyreō. It literally meant that it was obvious that Enoch had faith. One could just look at him and know that he served God. He was utterly blameless. However, it must be a step beyond even being blameless. There are many people in Scripture who are regarded as blameless (Noah, David, Job, etc) but none of them were taken up by God so that they would not see death. Despite their blamelessness, none of them pleased God to the degree that they should never feel the sting of death.

It's just something to ponder. Enoch must have been quite the humbling man if he pleased God in a way that even Abraham, Noah, David, and Job never did. Anyone else ever wonder about this or notice it in Scripture?

Its cool. The closer one walks with God, the more he becomes like God.
