Best age to let him pierce his ears? 15? wait til 18?

For a young man who wants to pierce his ears, like so many young men do (including in church youth groups, etc.), when would be the suitable time for a parent to let him have it done? does 15 seem okay? or maybe 16, 17, or maybe even tell him he's got to wait until 18?

Most teens around here seem to be getting their ears pierced between fifteen and seventeen. Judging by this I would say, maybe, sixteen. If he is going to get his ears gauged, however, make sure he really wants it because it looks pretty painful.

Yes, because some ppl would want to avoid 18 being the age when they are suddenly allowed to do all sorts of stuff; rather, maybe better to give a young man gradually more freedom to make his decisions as the teen years go by, as long as it doesn't involve anything false or immoral.

Young men do both ears, don't they?

(Gauging? well, like a tattoo, etc., DEFINITELY wait until over 18, unless it's just a 16 or 14 gauge, maybe.)

Well of course! Its good to become more independent gradually. The teen culture in NJ usually consists of the "hardcore" or "emo" image, so most teens usually have either one ear pierced or both ears gauged. It usually depends on the sort of image the teen wants to portray. Sometimes having a stud in each ear is considered to be pretty safe.

I would suggest going to a mall or place where you would see an abundance of teens to see what they're doing in your area. While this is the fashion here, it can be considerably different where you live.

I am thinking that for a teen young man to have a simple stud in each ear, is probably rather 'tame', even, in comparison with some of the 'over the top' -in my view- things that some of them do at that age, maybe? 'Pretty safe', you called it.

(I just wonder though if a 15 year old starts with studs each side, what he might end up doing at 18...)
