You know, in the last 6 years I've seen atheists, Muslims, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses and everything between here on TJ.
Other than the atheists, everyone says they "believe in Jesus". Yet I am sometimes astounded at how differently "believing in Jesus" is interpreted.

Does believing in Jesus simply mean I believe there was a guy named Jesus.
He may not have been the Son of God, or He may not have been God, but hey I believe in Him.
He may not have died for my sins, and He may not have been sinless, but hey I believe in Him.
He may not really be my Lord and savior but I believe in Him.
His teachings, actions and lifestyle.. I don't really believe in those things or follow them, but hey I believe in Jesus.
Some on here even say I don't have to believe in Jesus to get to heaven, there are other ways to get there.

Or does believing in Jesus really mean I believe in everything about Him?
I believe in what He taught, what he stood for, how He lived. I believe He is an example of how I should live.
I believe he really is my Lord and I should surrender my life to Him.
I believe I should follow His teachings as best I can.
I believe I'm a sinner and that He paid the price for my sins. That he died in my place and rose again.

What does believing in Jesus really mean?

I think k it means everything you mentioned here, except Jesus dying in our place. There are scriptures which can't be reconciled with that doctrine and scripture cannot be broken.

I am curious how you reconcile these verses?
Heb 9:14; how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Heb 9:15; For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
Heb 9:22; And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Heb 10:12; but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD,

Eph 1:7; In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
1 Cor 1:30; But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,

Rev 5:9; And they *sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.

Eph 5:2; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

Rom 5:6; For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
Rom 5:7; For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.
Rom 5:8; But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom 5:9; Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.

1 Cor 15:3; For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

1 Pet 3:18; For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;

How much more will Jesus blood wash our conscience from dead works, than the blood of animals washed the conscience's of the Israelites?

The question is, how does sacrifice cleanse conscience?

"...believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets... And have hope toward God...that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence (sin) toward God, and toward men." Acts 24:14-16
It was Paul's knowledge of Jesus, in His resurrection, that cleansed him, not sin transference:

"And every man that hath this hope (the hope of being raised as Jesus was) in him (in Jesus) purifieth himself, even as he is pure." 1 Jn.3:3

It is our hope that cleanses us from sin, not sin transference.
Brother, I'll get back to you on the rest...hopefully tomorrow.

Hope in what?

2 Cor 5:21; He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Matt 26:28; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins

In the old testament people had to sacrifice animals in order to be forgiven of their sins.
In the new testament Jesus was the lamb that was slain for our sins.

Heb 9:28; so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.
1 Pet 1:19; but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

Eph 5:2; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

Isa 53:4; Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5; But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
Isa 53:6; All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.

Brother, look. I'm going to respond to the scripture youre posting, but you also need to look at what I'm posting. If you're not going to read the scripture I'm sharing with you there's no point to our conversation. You ask, hope in what? Did you look at what Paul and John said about how it is the hope in Jesus resurrection that purifies them?

2 Cor 5:21; He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
How does Jesus become sin for us? Let's take this passage you cited:

1 Pet 2:22; WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH;
1 Pet 2:23; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;

Jesus was sinless and God judges in righteousness...right? If these two things are true, then God punishing Jesus for our sins cannot be true, because God never holds one person responsible for the sins of another person:

"When the son has practiced justice and righteousness and has observed all My statutes and done them, he shall surely live." Eze.18:19

This describes Jesus.

“The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity;" Eze.18:20

This means Jesus isn't going to "pay" for anyone's sin. Now watch:

1 Pet 2:24; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

If Jesus doesnt pay for the sins of others, how does Jesus "bear our sins in His body on the cross "?

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: Gal.3:13

How is Jesus made a curse, if God doesn't curse the sinless:

And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: De.21:22

IF someone does something worthy of death, hang him on a tree because....

...he that is hanged on a tree is cursed of God...DE:21:23

Jesus wasn't cursed by God, but people looked at Him that way:

we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. Is.53 :4

He committed nothing worthy of death.

To bear ones sins doesn't mean to literally be charged with ones sins. It means to because we have sinned, Jesus was burdened with it:

Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities. Lam.5:7

To bear someone's sins mean you were affected by them, not that you are guilty of them.

Matt 26:28; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins

In the old testament people had to sacrifice animals in order to be forgiven of their sins.
In the new testament Jesus was the lamb that was slain for our sins.
His blood was poured out in sacrifice to God:

For the life of the flesh is in the blood: Lev.17:11

He poured His life out because we are sinners. His example is the way to God:

And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man. Ge.9:5

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light.....the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1 Jn.1:7

There is no forgiveness of sin without repentance. There is no forgiveness without following Jesus.

Brother I'll have to finish the rest later.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

1 Jn 2:2; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

As I said in the OP, believing in Jesus means different things to different people.

2 Cor 5:21; He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

I haven't read all the previous threads so I don't know what the discussion is about, but as commentary on this verse, it says Jesus was made sin, not made sinful. It simply means that Jesus was born as a human being like us (John 1:14). Jesus only had the likeness of sinful flesh, but did not have the sinful flesh itself (Rom 8:3). Jesus was also like the bronze serpent (John 3:14), the bronze serpent was made in likeness of Satan, but the serpent itself was not Satan. On the cross Jesus was made to look like the serpent, but Jesus was not the serpent. Just as we or God cannot transfer someone's faith, strength or righteousness from one person to another, God did not transfer anyone's sin to Christ. When Jesus died on the cross He wasn't carrying anyone else's sins, but He was treated as if He was, He was treated as if He was carrying the sins of the whole world, and on this basis God forgives our sins. God forgives our sins because an innocent sinless man died for them. This is what it means for Christ to pay the price for our sins.

Because Jesus looked like the serpent Satan on that cross, and was crucified in the flesh (Col 1:22, 1 Pet 3:18), Satan was judged, Satan was destroyed (Heb 2:14), and God condemned sin in the flesh (Rom 8:3), which was caused by Satan. But Satan himself wasn't on that cross, neither was us with all our sins - it was all accomplished by the innocent Lamb, Christ being made in the likeness of the serpent and our sinful flesh. This is why Jesus asked the Father why He had forsake Him on the cross, being a sinless man, Jesus did not understand why God would forsake Him. Indicating that the Father treated his Son as a guilty sinner, even as the serpent Satan.

And what does it mean that Jesus is the appeasement for our sins? Is it that God is satisfied by Jesus being brutalized, or is it that God's anger is turned away when people repent and turn to Him because of Jesus?

Believeing in Christ means to put your faith in who he is and what he has done. If you don't believe Christ was the son of God who was buried, resurrected, and raised on our behalf, then you don't believe in Christ.

Basically, you cannot believe a false Christ, you have to believe in THE Christ, the son of God.

If the Truth about him is not in you, then you do not have faith in him.

Simple as that.

Thanks for keeping it simple Cosmic.

To believe on the the name of Jesus Christ, one has to have heard about him, to have heard about him, someone had to preach Christ to you, for someone to preach Christ to you, God had to first send them. It's all about God at the end of the day.

Amen Travis,

But, I will share my testimony for a moment...

I don't recall anyone ever explicitly explaining to me who Christ was or what he had done. But, after reading some of the words of Christ, I immediately knew who he was and believed everything. I also on that day believed in the inerrancy of scripture and the whole creation story in Genesis. It was miraculous in a way, and the only explaination was God.

Now, I might be missing some details because my memory is hazy, but I can assure you the faith I have is a miracle from God.

I don't want to disagree with anything you said, cause I hear you loud and clear.

To clarify what I was saying though. Jesus sent all the writers of the various books of the bible and inspired them to write what they wrote. So he may not have physically sent them to us, but he sent His words in their Mouths and in their pens to us. But even in Paul's (Saul's) case, the Father sent his Son, Jesus Christ directly to Paul via Revelation to convert him. So even in that case, someone was sent, namely the Son of God. I was just speaking in generalities though, there can always be some sort of exception found here or there that doesn't fit the mold.

Grace to you,

Travis

And what does it mean that Jesus is the appeasement for our sins? Is it that God is satisfied by Jesus being brutalized, or is it that God's anger is turned away when people repent and turn to Him because of Jesus?

It's interesting how this question is answered in Isaiah.

Isa 53:6; All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
Isa 53:7; He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.
Isa 53:8; By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
Isa 53:9; His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
Isa 53:10; But the LORD was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.

Other translations say it satisfied God's requirement for sin. (Travis is correct,it wasn't Jesus's sin).
God's wrath is turned away when we accept Jesus as our savior, Savior (from the word "save"). What did Jesus save us from.
Eternal death, hell-fire and damnation. Our death doesn't save us from anything. (Everyone dies, even those who don't believe in Jesus).
I can't imagine a worse way to die or a harder death than Jesus's. I think when people reject this, they are rejecting what God was willing to do for us.

WE can't save ourselves, if we could, we wouldn't need Jesus.

Act 4:12; "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."

Our iniquities "fell on" Jesus because God burdened Him with the task of redemption, not because God turned Jesus into a sinner by transference. This also means as we have shown disdain for God ( the sin of us all), Jesus would also be experience the effects of this sin.

Isa 53:8; By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?

The idea that God was pleased to torture His innocent Son is sadistic. Jesus was "crushed" because He did the will of His Father and this is what pleased God.

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. Ps.166:15

If God hold dear the deaths of those who believe in Him, how much more His own Son?

Other translations say it satisfied God's requirement for sin.
God's only "requirement" for sin is repentance.

(Travis is correct,it wasn't Jesus's sin).
God's wrath is turned away when we accept Jesus as our savior, Savior (from the word "save").
Jesus is our Savior only if we put our trust in Him and you're right...God's wrath is appeased by this.

I never said Jesus became sinful, I Jesus took our sin upon himself, there is a difference. Jesus paid the price for our sins, he was the sacrifice for our sins.
He didn't die for his sins, he didn't have any.

If repentance is all that is required, why do we need Jesus?
There are plenty of "good" and "moral" people out there that sin very little, but they don't believe in Jesus.
If all I have to do is repent (boy talk about saved by works alone). Then I can believe anything I want to, in whoever I choose.

The price of sin is death.

Rom 6:23;

(GW) The payment for sin is death, but the gift that God freely gives is everlasting life found in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(MSG) Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God's gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.

(NAS77) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(NASB) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(NIrV) When you sin, the pay you get is death. But God gives you the gift of eternal life because of what Christ Jesus our Lord has done.

(NIV) For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(NLT) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

There is only ONE way to God. And it's not by repentance alone.

John 14:6; Jesus *said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

I never said Jesus became sinful, I Jesus took our sin upon himself, there is a difference.
You want it both ways brother and it doesn't work. People say "Jesus became sin for us!" If Jesus truly became sin for us, He'd still be in the tomb. Therefore, the gospel as we have been taught it cannot be true.

Jesus paid the price for our sins, he was the sacrifice for our sins.
He sacrificed Himself BECAUSE we are sinners. Big difference!

Jesus lived His entire life in sacrifice to God, including not resisting those who murdered Him. His teachings and miracles were meant to produce in people faith in God. His mission wasn't to have our sins transferred onto Him and be punished by God for it.

He didn't die for his sins, he didn't have any.

That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? Ge.18:25

I think Abraham knew God a little better than Christian dogma of today.

If repentance is all that is required, why do we need Jesus?
Because the angels who sinned defiled the Temple in Heaven and Jesus cleansed it with His blood.

There are plenty of "good" and "moral" people out there that sin very little, but they don't believe in Jesus.
Let's let Jesus judge people's hearts.

If all I have to do is repent (boy talk about saved by works alone). Then I can believe anything I want to, in whoever I choose.
Repentance originates from having a faith in God to begin with, not "works." And if you think repentance is a simple matter then you must believe changing the entire way you think and live is a simple matter.

The price of sin is death.
Rom 6:23;
(KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Exactly...because Jesus rose , those who follow Him will rise and be saved from death which they formerly sowed.

There is only ONE way to God. And it's not by repentance alone.
John 14:6; Jesus *said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Good...when the time comes, lets hope He recognizes us.

First, you said this "His mission wasn't to have our sins transferred onto Him and be punished by God for it."

This goes against the clear teaching of scripture, that is the ONLY reason why Christ went to the cross. It was not some unfortunate event that God didn't want to happen, if that were true, Christ could have avoided the cross if he wanted to.

John 1:29
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"

He layed down his life for us, if you don't understand that, I am shocked.

Next you said this "
That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? Ge.18:25

I think Abraham knew God a little better than Christian dogma of today."

Are you trying to say Jesus had sin of his own? God slayed Jesus for our sins, the righteous for the unrighteous. I shouldn't really even have to justify myself, there is too much scripture for this.

Finally you said this "Because the angels who sinned defiled the Temple in Heaven and Jesus cleansed it with His blood."

Where do you find a teaching like that in the Bible? Christ's blood was to atone for our sins, not the dirtiness of some temple in heaven.

You got it backwards my friend. Jesus went to the cross because He lived righteously and those in power hated Him
This is why He said:

"...this is your hour, and the power of darkness." Lk.22:53

"For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet." Ps.22:16

It was not some unfortunate event that God didn't want to happen, if that were true, Christ could have avoided the cross if he wanted to.
Yes He could have, but He chose to suffer because of His obedience to God, not because God put our sins on Him.

John 1:29

I understand the scriptures better than I ever have before. How does the Lamb of God take away the sins of the world?

"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out,..." Ac.3:19

Next you said this "
That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? Ge.18:25

Are you trying to say Jesus had sin of his own?
No. I'm saying Abraham knew that God doesn't punish the Righteous, but according to you, He does. Better rethink your position my friend, because believing things about God that aren't true is a bad idea.

Finally you said this "Because the angels who sinned defiled the Temple in Heaven and Jesus cleansed it with His blood."
Where do you find a teaching like that in the Bible?
...In Hebrews 9 & 10 it says Jesus cleansed the temple in Heaven and also was able to enter the Holy of Hollies for us. The Holy Spirit was behind the curtin:

"Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you." Jn.16:7
