Becoming Jesus own by faith in Jesus by His sacrafice for our sins is what makes us christians and saved.
bible talks also about crucifying the flesh as being part of characterics of those who have accepted Jesus as their savior. This is a characterics not something we do.
Gal 5:24-25
(24) And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
(25) If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
we always have free will to live after flesh or spirit but the most part is already done by the Grace of God. the fact that we aren't judged by sin allows us to resist sin as well.

The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
The issue of Law giving power to sin was dealth by Jesus death that makes us forgiven and free from the curse of the law:
Rom 7:4-5
(4) Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
(5) For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
This adoption to God's family made us not be in flesh anymore but we have died to our old self and are now living with Christ :
Rom 6:3-4
(3) Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
(4) Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
This is effect of faith alone and God's grace.
We have been like bible says planted together with him in likeness of his death, though we never died physically like Jesus did we have undergone the death as well:
Rom 6:5-6
(5) For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
(6) Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
The body of sin has been destroyed metaphorically speaking by God's grace.
This is possible because law's problem was always that it created lusts:
Rom 7:7-8
(7) What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
(8) But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
Since the law has been removed from judging us and we have received God's holy spirit to indwell us, we are not in the flesh anymore:
Rom 8:9
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
This is what's makes us able to overcome sin but also crucify it's desires altogether. And that is our victory in Christ, God's grace.
Rom 8:16
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
For this reason Paul states we have ability to walk after spirit since we have been Born again from God's holy spirit:

Paul is reminding us that we do in fact live in Spirit.

If we try to strive against sin in fear of condemnation we are striving against the law. But in Christ the law is removed, in fact only because law is removed we are God's own.
If the law had not been removed by Jesus death we could never be God's own. (Rom 7:1-4)
