The Bible is the living Word of God. All born again believers are to live by it. 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 tells us that when Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in a flame of fire; He will deal out retribution (chastisement and vengeance) upon those who do not know or perceive or become acquainted with God, and upon those who ignore and refuse to obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These people will pay the penalty and suffer the punishment of everlasting ruin (destruction and perdition) and eternal exclusion and banishment from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.
So, how does a person become acquainted with God? What does the word acquainted mean? Definition of acquaint: To make known, to make familiar. To acquaint one's self, is to gain an intimate or particular knowledge of. Job 22:21-Acquaint now thyself with Him and be at peace; thereby good shall come unto thee. When you ask me if I am acquainted with a particular individual, you want to know if I understand him/her character thoroughly. A person can know God when his/her heart comes in sympathy with God, and enters thoroughly and heartily into His character and plans. Until a person is prepared to give up all self-will on every subject, he cannot become acquainted with God. God says to us, give me your heart. Yield up your will to mine. Proverbs 23:26-My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways. Self-will rebells, and can have no sympathy with God, and consequently cannot really become acquainted with Him.
We must be willing to know God as He is, to have a really honest desire to become acquainted with Him thoroughly. Sinners do not want to become personally acquainted with God. They do not desire personal meetings with Him. Born again believers have an ardent burning thirst for the knowledge of God. They cannot be satisfied with an outward, distant knowledge of God; they long to know Him thoroughly as is possible for humans in the flesh. If people are bent on sustaining their own interests, they cannot know God. Only when we hand over our own desires and interests to God, leaning our whole personality on Him can we become acquainted with Him.
We must study the Bible. God has given us certain promises and the condition of their fulfillment is that we really believe them. Much of our trials and temptations are designed to work out for us the experience of God's power, presence, and willingness to bless and teach us many things about His character. Studying God's Word builds our faith and gives us confidence to pass through trials.
I want to have such an intimate communion with God that I really enter into His deepest sympathies and know His real heart. Because I acquaint myself with God, I have peace of mind. When I feel as God feels, when I live as He lives; then I cannot possibly fail at having perfect peace of mind. It is a most blessed truth that when the restless mind of man comes to be acquainted with God, it finds in Him everything it can need. Every want is fully and forever well supplied. The more acquainted I become with God, the more I want to obey Him under all circumstances. John 14:15-If you love Me, you will obey Me.
The more acquainted I become with God, the more of His courage and boldness are present in my life. As I know God more, I am charmed with His plans and ways, and I feel myself more and more identified with all His interests. I have real comfort because I have an intimate relationship with God. I am not like the wicked that are like the troubled sea when it cannot rest.-Isaiah 57:20. They don't know what it is to be free from cares and troubles because they aren't acquainted with God.
All of us who are really acquainted with God will have an earnest longing to see others made acquainted with Him. Every moment I spend studying the Bible, I am becoming more acquainted with God. And, when I communicate with Him throughout the day, I can live in His perfect peace and will for my life.
God, every day may more and more people become acquainted with You; that they will not only have an intellectual knowledge of You, but a relational knowledge with You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
Love in Christ,
Jan
