Baptism, probably one of the most controversial subjects of the whole Bible. What makes it so controversial? The true lack of study through the Bible as a whole. The word baptize comes from the Greek word baptizmo which means totally emerged.

The first subject of this teaching that is taught but wrong is that water baptism is not necessary. If this were true then it would not be written in the Bible, and if it had no true importance it would not have been written so many times in the Bible. It is for this reason that we can not take this verse or that verse and leave it by itself. It causes to many conflicts and different teachings of the word of God.

What does the Bible state that the soul purpose of baptism is? Well let us take a look at the scriptures and see what is truly said of baptism.

Mark 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Luke 3:3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins

Both of these verses tell us of baptism for the remission of sins. Yes these are water baptisms by John the Baptist. However many seem to believe that water baptism holds no importance of today. That people should not be baptized with water. The next verses are going to show that this teaching is false.

Mark 16:16- He that believes and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believes not shall be damned.

Here Jesus himself states that belief is the key but he commands us to be baptized and makes the statement the those that believe and are baptized shall be saved. But to be baptized without faith is worthless.

Acts 2:38- Then Peter said unto them, repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The day that we all believe was the start of the new testament church and what was stated? For them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. This showing that it did not stop with john the baptist. So if it did not stop at John the Baptist and it happened on the day of Pentecost then it is safe to say that we should still baptize in water.

Now we are going to get people that are going to state that in acts chapter 1:5 they were baptized by the Holy Spirit and not water.
This is the actual gift of the Holy Spirit that they obviously would not receive while they were still walking with Christ. Because Christ was all the power that they needed while He was on the earth.

The other problem with this teaching is that if water baptism has no point or authority to it, then why is everyone that accepts Jesus Christ as their lord and savior baptized with water. There is not one person through the book of acts (the start of the church after Christ ascended into the heavens.

I have never taught anyone that baptism is salvation. Rather i call it the first act of obedience of our salvation. Some people do not receive the Holy Spirit until they are water baptized and others receive the Holy Spirit before water baptism. However there are none no not one that is not water baptized in the new testament except the thief on the cross. Whom do to circumstances could not be water baptized.

Now concerning baptism being the physical showing of faith to the public. If this were true then why are there instances in the book of acts, where people were baptized with out anyone else. Not to mention that the word of God states that people will see our faith in things that we do in the spirit. If anyone needs scripture for this please let me know.

Water baptism to receive the Holy Spirit. This is a teaching that i will not say is true or false. Rather, whether or not it is the Lords will on how or when one receives the Holy Spirit. The reason that i say this is there are people throughout acts that received the Holy Spirit before water baptism and people that did not receive it until after water baptism. However i feel the more important fact of all this is actually that all that were saved in the book of acts was water baptized.

PLEASE DO NOT RESTRAIN FROM WRITING ME BACK AND GIVING SCRIPTURE IF YOU FEEL THIS IS IN ERROR OF THE WORD OF GOD. IF WE SIT SILENT THEN WE DO NOT GROW BECAUSE OF LACK OF COMMUNICATION.

Your brother on Christ,
Chris Overy
