With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You. Psalm 119:10-11 NKJV

On the cover of his Bible, the seventeenth-century Christian writer John Bunyan scrawled this note: “Either this book will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from this book.”

Bunyan understood the same thing about the Word of God as the writer of Psalm 119; it gives believers the power to endure temptation to sin. The Bible identifies itself as a source of tremendous power for the Christian who reads it and allows the Holy Spirit to make it come alive in his life.

If you want a good example of this kind of power, look no further than Jesus Himself.

In Matthew 4, we read of the devil relentlessly tempting the Lord, but we also read of Jesus defeating that temptation by speaking the Word of God back to the enemy (see vv. 4, 7, 10). In the end, Satan had no choice but to flee the scene of the attempted crime.

There is no more powerful weapon against sin than the words in the Bible. Believe it! And then see how God can keep you from sin when you make the Book a priority in your life.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for providing Yourself as an example of how to endure the temptations the devil, this world, and my own flesh throw my way.
