Judas Iscariot: His Call
and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. Matt 10:4b (KJV)
Judas never had a saving faith in Jesus, and from the start believed he could have clout with a political and religious enterprise Jesus would establish. In spit of such selfish motives, Judas followed Christ half-heartedly until disillusioned about the real nature of the Kingdom.
Jesus chose Judas very purposefully: "For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him" (Jn 6:44). The Lord made a further reference to Judas after the false disciples at Capernaum turned away: "Did I myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil? Now He meant Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray Him"(Jn 6:70-71).
Before His death, Jesus made additional mentions of Juda`s unique situation among the twelve:But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! Luke 22:21-22, While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
John 17:12 (KJV).
Although our minds can`t understand it, God had predeterminded Juda`s betrayal of Jesus. At the same time, however, God held him completely accountable for his sin because he acted by his own will. Those seemingly contradictory truths are ultimately resolved only in the mind of God. And we must recognize this as we comphrend other similarly difficult scriptural truths.
ASK YOURSELF: Most every unbeliever thinks their god works or good intentions will be enough to earn them measure of clout and understanding with God. What keeps this fatal hope alive in a human heart? What can we say in response to those who are so sure about life but so risky about death?
Amen
