That same day Jesus was approached by some Sadducees--religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead. Matthew 22:23
Talk about a bunch of rich fools. The high priest and his fellow Sadducees acted like Jewish aristocrats. They ruled the temple and ran the Lord right out the door. They denied some of the most basic teachings of scripture—life after death, heaven, hell, angels, demons, miracles (Acts 23:8)—to the point of casting doubt on God Himself. No wonder Jesus harshly rebuked them and said, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God” (Matthew 22:29 NLT).
After Pentecost, the Sadducees were very disturbed that Peter and John were claiming, on the authority of Jesus, that there is a resurrection of the dead. They arrested the two leading apostles (Acts 4:1-3) and later threw the whole lot—including Matthew—into jail (Acts 5:17-18). The apostles must have seen the irony when God sent an angel to perform a spectacular miracle that threw the Sadducees into a fit.
Like the Sadducees, you can be tempted to doubt the supernatural details of God’s Word. Yet if God is God, nothing is impossible!
Unlike the Sadducees, stand in awe of the Lord, gladly acknowledge His mighty power, and heed His every word.
Prayer: Lord, transform me. Unlike the Sadducees, I never want to become a skeptic, doubting You and Your Word.
