Are You Unlike Pilate?

"Don't you hear all these charges they are bringing against you?" Pilate demanded. But Jesus made no response to any of the charges, much to the governor's surprise. Matthew 27:13-14

What’s your greatest claim to fame? Besides Jesus, it’s said that no other man’s name is spoken more often in churches around the world every Sunday than Pontius Pilate. That’s because he is mentioned by name in the Apostle’ Creed.

Why all the attention? History portrays Pilate as a rash, capricious, and ultimately ineffective Roman provincial governor. At his greatest hour of testing, Pilate failed miserably by condemning to death the world’s only innocent man—God’s Son, Jesus Christ.

Each of the Gospel writers records this trial at length. Ironically, they almost make it sound as if Pilate is on trial, not Jesus. And for good reason. If Pilate committed one more blunder, he knew Caesar might throw him forcefully out of office, disgraced.

Despite his better judgment, Pilate bowed to the political will of the chief priests and sentenced Jesus to merciless flogging and crucifixion. In a futile attempt to save his own neck, Pilate washed his hands, effectively signing away the rest of his life in bitter exile.

When the pressure was the greatest, Pilate listened to everyone—except his conscience, his wife, and the Truth.

Prayer: Lord, transform me. Unlike Pilate, I want to embrace Your truth wholeheartedly.
