Phl 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

There are no doubt many, many verses in the New Testament that are what one may call "stand alone verses", meaning that they can be quoted separately from the verses preceding and/or following without twisting the writer's point. Philippians 2:12 is not one of them.

When you cite Philippians 2:12 by itself, you are skewing Paul's message by emphasizing human endeavor as the primary force in believers' good works. The correct citation is as follows: "...continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose." (Phil 2:12-13)

Works based on human effort alone are nothing more than altruism. And altruistic works fade away quickly, no matter how truly good and beneficial they are, because they lack the staying power of works generated in us by the Holy Spirit.

First- clearly we cannot be justified by works alone.

Next- neither can we be saved by faith alone. Now before your feathers get ruffled, let's be clear- faith not accompanied by good works is dead (James) and not real.

SO- it is less than clear the precise causal nature of the relationship between faith and works. I'd suggest that perhaps the view that good works are a result of faith only overlooks an important synergy between faith and works. Keeping in mind that works in their worldly impact can't save you, I'd note that works have a profoundly spiritual component as well. When we encounter Christ in faith we are able to to access the profound and essential salvation. Yet remember that we also encounter Christ in works (when you do it for the least of them, you do it for me) and gain likewise understanding. Thus when we speak of justification, Faith is primary in that we understand faith as our being baptised in the holy spirit and sharing in Christ's forgiveness. Works can't justify your sins- only Christ can forgive. But good works is an essential part of a healthy relationship with Christ-not for what it does here on earth, but how it helps us to interact with Christ spiritually.

Faith and works are both something which should be visible in every born-again believer. But many seem to think that the scriptures are addressing carnal faith and carnal works. The faith and works are not carnal but spiritual. They are not our faith or works, they are God's faith and works in and through us. They are evidence of submission to Father, giving Christ preeminence as Lord and following HolySpirit.

Yes, this is where most get confused. One needs to be more spiritual, to identify the difference between the spiritual, inner self and inner healing from God and the carnal world, works and lusts thereof. God knows our heart, whether we do or say anything out of our own heart and lustfulness or if we do things out of love and compassion for others and for His glory.

Gal 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
Gal 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Gal 3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
Gal 3:4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.

Mat 15:13 He answered, "Any plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.

Joh 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Joh 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

Jesus is the vine and our Father is the gardener.
