Then I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love. Nehemiah 13:22 ESV

When Nehemiah helped re-establish the city of Jerusalem, he found that many people continued to conduct business on the Sabbath rather than keeping it holy. He was forced to take the dramatic step of sending the Levites to guard the gates of the city to ensure that people actually observed the Sabbath. Although he was surely criticized for this “anti-business” policy, he looked to God for approval and justification. The consequences of disobedience were all around him in the city’s ruined walls.

Sometimes obedience to God’s commands may require you to take drastic steps to guard against your worst inclinations. For instance, an alcoholic may remove all alcohol from his home just to limit the temptation. Taking action like Nehemiah may draw the unwanted attention of others, and it could even lead to criticism.

Temptation can turn into a downward spiral away from daily fellowship with God. Without a realistic understanding of the seriousness of sin, you won’t take the necessary steps to guard your heart and your daily choices from the lure of sinful indulgence.

Prayer: Lord, help me to make the sacrifices and changes necessary to obey Your Word.
