And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, "The LORD [is] with you, you mighty man of valor!" Gideon said to Him, "O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where [are] all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, 'Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites." Judges 6:12-13 NKJV
If anyone had small mustard seed faith, it was Gideon. The Lord had to coax Gideon step by step out of hiding and into becoming the mighty hero He wanted him to be.
Gideon wanted to be sure the Lord was speaking to him. When God provided Himself, Gideon worshipped Him and destroyed his family’s pagan Baal altar and Asherah pole. Soon afterward, the Spirit of the Lord filled Gideon. After another confirmation from the Lord, he was ready to set forth!
Then God gave Gideon one final sign he hadn’t requested. A detailed dream recounted by an enemy soldier confirmed that Gideon could obey God in full confidence—the battle would be theirs! Sure enough, the Lord’s promises came true.
Rescuing Israel in the strength the Lord had given him, Gideon the mighty hero learned what it meant that the Lord was with him.
Gideon had only a few if any pages of scripture, but you have the whole Bible. What’s keeping your faith from growing?
Prayer: Lord, you want me to obey Your Word’s clear-cut commands for believers today. Give me wisdom and courage!
