Isaiah 6

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne,
high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.

2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face,
with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

3 And one cried to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”

4 And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out,
and the house was filled with smoke.

5 So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips.
And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the
King, The Lord of hosts.”

Powerful verses by any measure, what is fascinating is line 3.

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”

Yes, the word used to describe the Lord is "holy".
It is repeated three times, it is highly significant, I do not
recall a descriptive word of the Lord used three times in succession.

This obviously is of immense importance, does anyone know what
"Holy" means other than purity?

Hey David good question and topic for study. The English word holy comes from the Old English word halig and means whole or wholeness and was used to translate the Hebrew word qadowsh.

Some interpret that one said holy, then another one repeated holy and yet another. It is also common with Hebrew poetry and song to repeat things three times.

When I have a little more time I will search to see how it was translated in the Septuagint.

Let us reflect on just what the Word (the Logos) went through while on earth.
The incredible physical torture, and the incredible spiritual grief.
Methinks, He is serious about all of this salvation business.
Who will go to Heaven to spend eternity with the Holy God?

In other verses Holy means "to be set apart".

In Matthew 5:48 we are told to be perfect, as our Father is perfect. This word in the Greek is from 5046, teleios, which also means or infers completeness and perfectness.

In Ephesians 5:26 the wife is made holy, sanctified, consecrated and cleansed.

So, being holy is having wholeness/completeness, perfection, being sanctified, cleansed and being set apart (for a special purpose).

The problem I have is I can only extract one word "perfection" from your reply. The rest of the descriptions are less useful. The Lord is not cleansed, set apart nor sanctified.

Some kind of deep purity seems to be more to the point of what Holy means. The fact that it is repeated in Revs is also important. Thanks Peace Seeker I forgot about that.

You asked what "holy" means other than purity, and the stab I took at it was in the context of our being holy, not God. You're right, the Lord obviously doesn't have to be made complete, perfected, sanctified, cleansed, etc.

As to "holy" having a sense of deep purity to it, I have no doubt it does, as God's qualities are very deep, expansive and indescribable.

This is a very good reply,

As to "holy" having a sense of deep purity to it, I have no doubt it does,
as God's qualities are very deep, expansive and indescribable.

There seems to be a much deeper level of revelation involved.

It is there for a reason Peace Seeker, we need to find out as best as possible what it means.

As far as I am concerned, the Lord is describing His true nature in some depth.

A particular aspect of His nature that is astronomically removed from our own.

I suspect that is why we struggle with this revelation.
