Picture yourself as a shepherd outside Bethlehem at the time of Christ’s birth. First, one angel arrives with good news, then thousands more pop into view singing, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14).
At that time, the people of Israel were waiting for an earthly Messiah who would save them from earthly rulers. They expected Him to come in power and seize control of the government. They were expecting the Lion of Judah. Instead, they got the Lamb of God.
Jesus came in a humble way, and though He demonstrated His power through miracles and teaching, His revolution was different from what the people of Israel were expecting. When they decided that their hope in Jesus was misplaced, they had Him crucified. But that was God’s plan all along!
Peace on earth wasn’t possible before Jesus took the punishment for our sins on the cross. Only once He was slain could He become both the Lion and the Lamb, worthy to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise. Today, sing praises with the angels because Jesus made a way for peace!
Prayer: Lord, You are worthy of all praises. Bring Your peace into my life.
