THERE was no reason for David to be afraid of God, if he conformed to the rules laid down in Leviticus. There it was expressly ordained that the Ark should be carried on the shoulders of the priests, because the cause of God must proceed through the world by the means of consecrated men, rather than by mechanical instrumentality. David ignored this provision when he placed the Ark on the new cart. He disobeyed the distinct law of the Divine procedure. What wonder that Uzza was struck dead! Fire will burn if you persist in violating its law. Obed‑edom, on the other hand, studiously obeyed, so far as he knew them, the Divine regulations, and to him the Ark was a source of blessing; just as fire will toil for us in our furnaces and grates, and be the greatest possible benediction to human Iife, if only we carefully conform to its ascertained and immutable law.

God is to us what we are to Him. To Pharaoh, blackness and darkness; to Israel, light and help. To the froward, He is froward; to the merciful man, merciful.To one of the thieves, the cross of Christ was the savour of death unto death, because his heart was impenitent; to the other, the savour of life unto life, because his heart was soft and believing You need not fear God so long as you walk in his ways and do his will. He is to be feared only by those who violate his law. God is a consuming fire. He will make a breach on those who disobey Him. He will consume the evil of our inner life. But let Him be welcomed into your life and home; let the Ark, which is the symbol of his presence, dwell within; bring up your children to minister unto Him; and you will be blessed, with all that you have.

This story shows us we need to take God seriously doesn't it.

To often we get so familiar, or so we think, that that familiarity breeds a sort of contempt.

With our Lord and our God we should never allow that.

Lean not to our own understanding, but in all our ways acknowledge him, and he will direct our paths.

Chad this is a great post because it is so true in so many ways. But I am not for sure about the word "afraid" and "fear" are the same thing or not.

I do remember in my young age that I was going through some very hard times, I was a christian at this age too. I remember saying something to myself out loud and the Lord rebuke me for it and have spoken to me within saying, "Don't never say this again". Chad you can be assure that got my attention and yes the fear of God was upon my heart. I have never said it again.

Sometimes I think the fear of the Lord is necessary because we know that God (means business) don't know if this is the right words to use. But I know that He rebuked me because He loves me, and I did not say it no more out of fear and also I did not want to displease God.

Trish, many times the word fear simply means reverent awe......not fear in the sense that we're fearful he will clobber us, or kick us out etc. Its a word for respect, and honor .....
There is the other fear, and the Bible says; Perfect love cast out fear.
May be my understanding is faulty, but I only know of one who has perfect Love, and that's Jesus.
If we suffer from fear in a bad sense, we need to take it to the cross, lay it down, and claim his perfect love shown there.
Claim it for our own, and rest in his perfect peace.

Man is still making that same sin of presumption today; he is trying to direct and help the presence of the Living God. The result is always the same death. He is also trying to touch God outside of the blood covering (Christ) and the result is again death.

The Philistines wanted to know if they were truly struck by the hand of God or chance misfortune.
We should be more like those cattle they sent the Ark home on:

1Sa 6:7 Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:
1Sa 6:8 And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
1Sa 6:9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.
1Sa 6:10 And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:
1Sa 6:11 And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.
1Sa 6:12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.

Every natural instinct of these two momma cows was to return home to their calves. Every natural instinct told them not to walk that road where their very flesh would be sacrificed and yet lowing as they went they walked in obedience to the leading of God.
