When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather [that] a tumult was rising, he took water and washed [his] hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see [to it]." Matthew 27:24 NKJV
When Jesus died, the earth physically shook. Before that, Peter’s heart shook when he lied repeatedly about knowing Jesus. Sandwiched between those two events, a Roman governor named Pilate saw the potential for a riot over Jesus, and he too was shaken.
Shaken people make poor decisions. Shaken people make bad leaders. Shaken people would agree. But God can take human insecurity and still get His work done. In Peter’s case, the lesson he learned from his time of being shaken led him to become a strong leader in the early church.
All of the unnerving events you read about in Matthew 27 led to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. This shaking led to an unshakable covenant between God and mankind. You can be unshakable because the very bad day that was Jesus’ crucifixion means there is nothing that can keep you from God.
Prayer: Father, this walk I’m on finds me confronting things that make me nervous. It seems like anger might be a good response—or sadness, or maybe fear. Strengthen my spiritual knees and ankles, because I want to stand with—and for—You.
