So teach [us] to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

The psalmist focuses on the hardship and brevity of life with a breathtaking and unvarnished perspective. Life is fleeting and painfully short, and even more striking, God sees every person's failures and sins. There is nowhere to hide, and there's no way to get an extension on life beyond what everyone else has.

How should believers respond to this seeming tragedy? With faith and trust in God, surely. But how?

Perhaps the most important step you can take is to fully enter into the sorrow and tragedy of this psalm. You don't have to stay in a state of fear and dread about the reality of death. Rather facing the brevity of life can lead to better choices and wisdom. Who would knowingly waste a short life on the foolish pursuit of pleasure? Who would risk God's anger when everything could be swept away in a moment?

The limits and boundaries of life can sharpen your thinking and lead to better long-term investments of your time. God hasn't abandoned you to the sorrow and suffering of this world. In fact, the wise, who live in fear of God, will receive God's comfort. The sooner you recognize God's comforting presence, the better you'll spend your time each day.

Prayer: Lord show me how to use my time well today.
