An Argument Againts Once Saved Always Saved

  • It's because they were told they were already 'saved' and there was nothing else to do but just believe... Please show any scripture that supports " they were told" they were saved. As far as I know, there is no such thing and I would learn something new if you can provide that.

Sorry, but the requirement for you to answer why Jesus showed those five foolish virgins are turned away needs to be answered first. (And I think you know already that the OSAS doctrines preach that all one need to be saved is just believe on Jesus only, and when they do they are told they are saved right then with nothing else they need do. As of yet, we only have the promise of being saved through our Faith on Christ Jesus, none of us have been saved as of yet, for the redemption of our bodies by Christ is not until the resurrection, and the resurrection isn't past already is it?)

  • not merely treat His Grace like a Houdini act when the time and situation suits us.

  • Why is it that for a " Anti- OSAS" person, you always come down to such actuations. I have supported OSAS for a very long time and it always comes down to this: that I think I can sin all I want , to support my own purpose. No, sin I will but Paul said Romans 8:1.
  • If Christ is in you, what does it mean there is no condemnation?
  • Do you have Christ in you?
  • Can you show me scripture that says He will leave you?
  • Do you still sin?

Maybe you ought to go back to Romans 8:1 and actually read all... that very first verse instead chopping it up to read how you want, which is an example of the kind of Houdini act I was talking about.

Rom 8:1
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
(KJV)

Notice Apostle Paul applied a condition with that part in bold. That is, no condemnation IF we walk by The Holy Spirit and not after our flesh.

Can the believer go back to walking after their flesh after they have believed on Jesus and been baptized in His Name. Yes, and that's where the OSAS doctrine of man falls flat on its face. This is why Jesus made repentance of future sins a requirement to stay in that Walk with Him; which is why His answer to how to pray includes asking The Father for forgiveness through Him (Luke 11:4).

Here's why Jesus showed in Matt.25 the door is shut upon the five foolish virgins.

1. the five foolish virgins also await the coming of the Bridegroom (representing our Lord Jesus' second coming), and they have Oil (symbol for The Holy Spirit) in their lamps, but they have no spare vessel of that Oil. This reveals those five foolish virgins as believers on Christ also with the five wise virgins.

2. While the Bridegroom taried, they all slumbered and slept - this represents the waiting on Christ's coming at the end of this world and the tribulation timing. In the parable of the laborers in the field Jesus used the symbol of the last hour, or eleventh hour in this case here in Matt.25. Christ and His Apostles commanded us to remain sober and awake during this eleventh hour just prior to Christ's coming.

3. At midnight, the ten virgins a cry is made that the Bridegroom is coming and to go out and meet him (per the Jewish marriage customs). This symbolizes the day of Christ's return after the tribulation.

4. all ten virgins trim up their lamps, but the Oil in the five foolish virgin's lamps has run out, just when they need it most. (it ran out sometime during the eleventh hour, i.e, during the tribulation).

5. the five foolish virgins ask of the five wise ones to borrow of their Oil, for the five wise had a spare vessel of that Oil to go with their lamps.

6.the five wise virgins say no, go to the market and buy of those who SELL.

7. the five foolish virgins go to the market, and the door is shut when they return, and ask it to be opened.

8. the Bridegroom tells the five foolish virgins, "Verily I say unto you, I know you not."

KEY: those who think that Oil can be bought and sold.

That is what is going on within many Churches today that are full of commercialism, full of the teachings of men, full of thinking to SELL Christ's Salvation to all those who THINK it can be BOUGHT, thus those Churches running like a MARKET (business).

In John 10 our Lord Jesus warned us about the "hireling" that resides over some of His flock that do it for wheat and barely (i.e., money like a business). When the wolves creep in they run and leave the sheep to the wolves. Those treat Christ's Church like some Bozo big top show. They aren't there to actually teach you what God's Word really says because God did not call those so they don't really understand much of God's Word as written. Because of that they have... to make up stories and doctrines that you will enjoy and believe, like entertainments.

  1. O.K. I did answer your foolish virgin verse but you wish not to listen. Also, I will say this with all humbleness, if you really understood the " Parable of the Ten Virgins", you would know it was not a matter of them running out of olive oil (which was a plenty at that time) but , it was a matter of them not having the oil in the first place. Also, with all respect, I don't need a lesson on Romans 8; I know fully well what it means , as a Christian, I do walk in the spirit and not in the flesh, that is another gift of God and not of my own doing.
  2. No you have OSAS doctrine all wrong: I don't know about you but I am saved, sealed and delivered! God has put his seal on me and that is forever!
  3. I am done playing games...you believe that your salvation is predicated of your future works, I do not! Let's then agree to disagree and leave it at that. No requirements for you to answer any of my questions!
  4. Have a blessed day!

I'm not gonna weigh in much on the whole OSAS doctrine as I feel like I'm currently not in a good place to weigh in as I myself am confused about this and many other things but I can say that I am slowly starting to believe that Salvation is not a product of works, works is a product of salvation.

LIke you I have a lot to learn but, as far as I am concerned, you are headed in the right direction.
First the cross then resurrection and then God's free gift of grace to have faith in them all, finally works of the spirit. James 2:14-17
Blessed are you..Matthew 16:17

The door is shut to the wedding feast, or marriage supper of the lamb, not salvation or heaven. See Rev 19:9 and Matt 22 - the wedding feast is a reward given to faithful believers, not a merit or condition to enter heaven. Foolish virgins with lamps, are believers (virgins) with regenerated spirits (lamps), and those who are not filled with God (oil) - they have not paid the price to grow in God, by denying their soul, taking their cross and following Christ.

Tell me Last Things, what is fallacious about my statements?

My statement ...

I was pointing out that you probably should not make an argument with the same logic as a well known logical fallacy.

is an example of truth triumphing over man's wisdom.

Truth cannot be illogical though. The problem with your argument is that is based on an unsupported premise.
No true Christian would ______
Someone does ______
Therefore they are not a Christian.

That is a logical fallacy because you made a claim "_______" without giving evidence for it.

Once you are "born again" of the Holy Spirit of God, you know God and you know God is real.

People have faith in God and it is obvious that people leave that faith. I have known plenty of Born Again Christians who produced the same fruits and behaved that same way as everyone else that left the faith.

Last Things,

I do not believe you understand that my statement regarding "no true Scotsman" is a direct assault to logical fallacies. Intended to state the obvious.

Logical fallacies do not prove a claim is wrong, it proves its method of argument is wrong.
You can make a statement whose conclusion is true in an illogical way. The problem is that the conclusion should be disregarded until the truth can be argued in a logical way.

This thread is about the once saved always saved doctrine. Many people profess to be "christian" yet have never been born of the Holy Spirit of God. They do not KNOW Him because they have not been reborn of the Spirit. They can and do deny Jesus and Jesus will deny them too.

But a true Christian, one that has been born of the Holy Spirit of God, would never profess atheism because they know God is real.

People believe God is real. Satan and all those who have died now know God is real. I believe ome people have a very emotional response when they got 'saved', some people are told by others that they must 'know' and if they even doubt knowing for a second, then they aren't saved. So, they convince themselves they know. They have faith and may subconsciously doubt God, but they will refuse to even consider the thoughts because they believe by doing so they will go to hell. The faith becomes a source of pain and frustration. They hate it and hate the fact that some people aren't in the same boat. It is not surprising that some of the most religiously strict people are the meanest, while those who are comfortable with the faith of others and are open to questions and questioning are the most at peace. That is not to say all faiths are equal, but a person can speak the Gospel with words of kinds, or scare people into believing - turn or burn.

I have often found that when persons of this type are in discussions, they end it with some threat of hell to the other person. And no, I am not talking about you. I am just writing to what dangers I have noticed when people say that 'know'.

It's because they were told they were already 'saved' and there was nothing else to do but just believe, which is the main presentation of the OSAS doctrine of men. As believers on Christ we're expected to produce fruit in Him after we have believed and been baptized, not merely treat His Grace like a Houdini act when the time and situation suits us.

Not sure if I agree with your take on the parable, but I do agree there is a HUGE problem of people getting 'saved' then going about life as usual.

I think OSAS also helps people who are very scrupulous believe they will go to heaven even though deep down their own sense of worth and guilt leads them to wonder if they may constantly fear they won't.

There are many elements to this parable, but ultimately they do not enter the wedding feast because they were not prepared. Matthew 22 is likewise about someone who is not prepared, he did not have the proper clothes.

I really am listening though, just not paying heed to your negative remarks like Bill Clinton's 'depends on what the world IS means.' Those kind of statements don't address the subject at hand.

The lamps the five foolish virgins had ran out of the Oil. I covered that trimming up their lamps which you missed, which shows you're the one that didn't listen. It's obvious those didn't have a spare vessel of the Oil like the five wise virgins did, because the Scripture is clear on that as my explanation was also.

Your own idea you pulled from Romans 8:1 did not actually align with what Paul said there:

In your post #120 where you referred to Romans 8:1 you said, "If Christ is in you, what does it mean there is no condemnation?"

But the actual verse reads:

Rom 8:1
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
(KJV)

Your interpretation leaves the idea in that latter phrase out, because it is a condition that depends on whether the first phrase will be true or not. If we walk after The Spirit there is no condemnation. If we do not walk after The Spirit then condemnation can still exist. Apostle Paul had much to say about the condition of our walk in Romans and especially in Galatians 5, which goes with this Romans 8:1 idea.

I agree that Christ's free gift enables us to live in The Spirit and walk after The Spirit, but the idea of Paul's walking after The Spirit means action per his teaching in Galatians 5, i.e., what kind of fruit our walk produces reveals whether we walk by our flesh or by The Spirit.

That is different than the OSAS doctrines of today I've heard, because it omits Paul's condition on that walk. In Galatians 5 Paul gave an example list of walking after the flesh vs. walking after The Spirit. By walk of the flesh he said those shall not inherit the Kingdom of God, which is a pretty serious thing to miss telling the new believer about. OSAS often omits that point, much like you did with that Romans 8:1 verse with leaving out Paul's condition there in the latter part of that verse.

No you have OSAS doctrine all wrong: I don't know about you but I am saved, sealed and delivered! God has put his seal on me and that is forever!

I do not have the OSAS doctrines of men wrong. Your understanding shown here is an example of it, because it's obvious you're not really considering Paul's condition about that 'walk' by the flesh vs. by The Spirit. And what our Lord Jesus said in His warning for His servants to keep our garments lest we appear naked and ashamed doesn't mean He won't 'save' us, it's about what kind of condition we are saved in when He appears, and where we will be during His future Millennial reign with His elect (like the ten virgins example).

I am done playing games...you believe that your salvation is predicated of your future works, I do not! Let's then agree to disagree and leave it at that. No requirements for you to answer any of my questions!

  1. Have a blessed day!

That's good that you're done playing games, because I'm very serious about this matter, and have not been playing with you at all.

Neither our works or the law can save us. You and I both know that. Apostle Paul stated that too. Only Christ's Blood shed on the cross can save us. But our 'walk' after we have believed on Him and been baptized can... determine our condition with Him when He comes, which is exactly why... He gave us the ten virgins parable, the unprofitable servant, and His warning for us to stay on watch, and keep our garments lest we appear naked (spiritually - Rev.16:15; Rev.3:17).

Foolish virgins with lamps, are believers (virgins) with regenerated spirits (lamps), and those who are not filled with God (oil) - they have not paid the price to grow in God, by denying their soul, taking their cross and following Christ.

But see Luke 13:23-28...

Luke 13:23-28
23 Then said one unto Him, "Lord, are there few that be saved?" And He said unto them,
24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
25 When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, 'I know you not whence ye are:'
26 Then shall ye begin to say, 'We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.'
27 But he shall say, 'I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from Me, all ye workers of iniquity.'
28 There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.
(KJV)

And Matthew 22:14

Matt 22:14
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
(KJV)

Further, in 1 Corinthians 15:51-54 Apostle Paul gave more info about the condition of one's soul during Christ's future Millennial reign, and it involves those who put on immortality (first resurrection) vs. those who's souls remain in a liable to die condition for that thousand years. Paul gave 2 conditional changes there, not one, i.e., corruption (flesh) must put on incorruption (spiritual body) AND this mortal (mortal soul) must put on immortality (immortal soul). Some will only go through the first change with their soul remaining in a liable to die condition throughout Christ's thousand years reign, and those will involve Christian brethren that fell away, and the wicked.

I am sorry you failed to quote my " agree to disagree " request.
Before someone closes this important thread, I am really done discussing this with you.
God's blessings!

Yes, I believe because, in the end they were unsaved or never saved in the first place!

But they did believe they were saved- so how are you sure?

  • Well, I always start with the premise that there is a difference between understanding (knowing) and ultimately unbelief (or denying). Satan probably knows the truth better than we do but he remains in denial and will not accept Jesus Christ.
  • A common definition of a Parable would be a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels.
  • The parables that we are discussing here are stories of a Jewish bride and groom of old and there wedding feast and now, Jesus as the groom and man as the bride and the ultimate banquet in heaven.
  • The verses including parallel are a bit different, but for me, have the same out come, there were those who did not believe: Luke 14:7-14, Luke 14:15-24 and Matthew 22:1-14
  • The key is in the above Matthew 22 verse 14: "For many are called but few are chosen".
  • This is a common thread through out the scriptures, that God seperates the sheep from the goats, the wheat from the chaff or the believers from the non-believers...here is another one: Matthew 7:13-14 "Those who find it are few"!
  • These people that were excluded from the banquet were non-believers and not saved.

Not quite accurate.

Rom 11:25-32
25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
27 For this is My covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.
29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:
31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.
32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that He might have mercy upon all.
(KJV)

How is it that God is going to wipe that blinded part of Israel's sins away when they were in unbelief during this world?

The Biblical concept of God's election has to do with His Ways, not our ways. Apostle Paul shows that very clearly in the Romans 11 chapter about the part of Israel that God preserved in The Gospel vs. the part of Israel which was concluded in unbelief so The Gospel could go to us Gentiles.

Because so many Churches don't properly cover the future time of Christ's "thousand years" reign in connection with the OT prophets, many are unaware of how this can be, and instead are still in ignorance about it, thus becoming wise in their own conceits like Apostle Paul said there.

  • To edify those following this thread and with respect, the thread that you responded to was for Last things and not you.
  • What you say ignores the scriptures and explanation that I gave and say "not quite accurate". What is not accurate about the truths" wide is the path and narrow the gate" or "those who find it are few". This is for the Jew or the Gentile.
  • God has made the old covenent obselete Hebrews 8:13. When he did that, He made it obselete for the Jew also. If a Jew dies in unbeleif of Jesus Christ as the Messiah and Saviour, they will not go to heaven. That would be the "unpardonable sin"!
  • Yes Jesus did say : Matthew 5:17 but what he meant was that he fulfilled the law and that was according to fulfilling by the standards Jewish Eschatology for which the Orthodox Jew rejects him as Messiah/Savior.
